Increase Brightness (not vividness or clarity)??

      Hey guys,

Well had a couple of LDs last night to break a dry spell and would have had more if I wasn't so freaked out by them!! I won't post details here (you can read about it in my DJ), but basically I found this time and in the past that if I have a FA in my bedroom, the lightness/darkness level will be the same as it is in waking life. Last night it was dark outside and hence dark in my LDs since they started out in my bedroom as FAs.

The darkness made me paranoid and made me imagine things (none of which actually happened, which is comforting). I tried to increase the light by turning on my lamp (big flop as expected), increasing number of stars in the sky, creating a sun (failed at doing that), and yelling, "Increase brightness!" Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Suggestions?? I can't enjoy LDs properly if they're dark...

I have no idea..but these are some things that come to mind

-you could try to find a headlamp..one of those torches and put it on and eventually itll just become second nature?

-find a clock and pull the hands around 12 hours?

Ok Mes, i have not tested these methods properly since i don't have regular lucids like some people :p Ok, here goes, i'll give you a huge list of ideas.

      - Imagine a sun rise, wish a sunrise into existence and watch the sun rise up and your dreamscape slowly filling with light.
      - Touch a wall and believe that you are feeding light energy into the wall and watch as the rooms colours begin to brighten as it spreads throughout your dreamworld.
      - Imagine that the darkness around you is not literally darkness, it is just a dark mist that you have to rid yourself of, so try blowin it away and watch as things become brighter and clearer.
      - Summon daytime - Self Explanatory
      - Look into a mirror somewhere in your house and see yourself brighter in the other side of the mirror, then walk into the mirror asthough you changed from the dark world to the light world, thus it being bright.
      - When you awake and realise your dreaming from a FA or what not, imagine a remote into existence that will control everything in your dream (a bit like the remote on the movie "Click") and then go and pick it up and find the brightness setting and pump up the brightness.
      - Try clicking your fingers asthough you are turning the sun on and off and believe that it will work.

I think the main thing you have to strongly do is truly believe it will work and it will work! I wish you the best of luck Mes, have some brighter dreams

i used to use telekinisis to pull the sun back around the world. I hate it when its dark in my dreams too either that, or try a countdown. like say, "the sunrise will be in 10,9,8,7,etc. till 0 and expect the sun to be in the sky by then

Dark LDs can be nice. But light ones are clearer. I think your problem is expectance.

"I tried to increase the light by turning on my lamp (big flop as expected)"

You can't go around thinking like that. I've turned on lights to increase brightness, even if there was a delay, or a flicker, they would still come on. Heck, in an LD after visiting this forum (I had learned that light switches don't work in dreams), I failed to turn on a lightswitch, but could turn on a flashlight with ease! Don't think that just because people say it usually doesn't happen in normal dreams doesn't mean it can't happen easily in lucid dreams.

Besides turning on a light, I clap to make more stars, or change the moon. I've also closed a door, and then opened it again to reveal a brighter room than before. Once in a lucid, the bright moon hid behind a cloud. I blew at the cloud, and it dissolved into streaks, revealing not one, but three moons!

There are a variety of remedies for this. The best one is confidence.

Fly to another part of the world, where it would be day time because of the time zone.

Dont know if thats worth a try

Ooooh thank you, those are all great suggestions. I agree confidence is key. Next time I'll just have to shake off that feeling of paranoia somehow.

Lucid Seeker, that suggestion about walking through a mirror... that's the stuff of nightmares for me, but I guess I can kill two birds with one stone that way: face my fears AND brighten the place up!

Isn't it weird how we both had LDs last night that were too dark? Mine is posted in the Task of the month thread though!

I find asking DC's to do things for me works wonders!! So I would find a DC if you can, or if you see one ask them to do it for you, I am sure they would be more than happy to oblige

Adam, I just read that, that's pretty cool.

/me points to my head then to yours in a meaningful fashion.

I like the DC idea too. Might be hard to find one if I have a FA in my room, but, maybe my parents will do.

Either your parents or pretend you have the clap lights, you know where you clap and they come on, just think to yourself it will work

I would suggest AdaA and Lucid Seekrs idea's all of them should work if you believe and if you can move around in your FA I would suggest you go to the door and say to yourself that when you open it, it will be bright on the other side and then open it and WALA! Repeat as necessary until it works.

Perhaps try opening a portal to a completely different dreamscape - one that isnt at all related to real life, preferably somewhere bright and in the daytime. There you might have less holding you back in terms of confidence.

Actually, that would be the lucid task as well!

That seems the simplest actually. But what happens is I fly outdoors where it's still dark?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, this thread already makes me more confident.

I have a power I call spotlight vision. Spotlights emanate from my eyes and follow my sight. If that's not for you, you mentioned that you turned on a lamp. I've heard that dimmer switches are far easier to use in LDs than on/off switches.

Or... (more fun) light your house on fire, flames are nice and bright :-)

Try summoning a candle or torch/flash light. Hrm actually try being the fire, that'll be interesting and useful.

hmm, usually my LD's are always too bright =[. I ends up with me squinting so much and running around that I wake up.

Maybe we can merge ours together for the perfect LDs.

Some great suggestions above. Have managed to do this before. Had to convince myself that the light was changing, and accept it to be truth - much the same as accepting that you are flying. I didn't have any nifty trick for it, just willed the ambient light to magnify.

Check out http://www.lucidity.com/NL52.LightandMirror.html, it's a summary of an experiment done by Levitan and LaBerge. It has actual results to show that turning lights on and off is tricky in dreams, and only works about half the time.

It's interesting that they found that turning on a light switch is just as easy as willing the lights to come on... I think that means it's not entirely a confidence issue because it's a lot easier to be confident that a light will come on by flicking the switch, because that's what happens IRL.

In dreams, sometimes light levels are just hard to control. LaBerge thinks it might be because in the dream, the dreamer's visual cortex isn't active enough. If that's what's happening, it might be hard to lighten up the dream just by changing setting... the new setting would just as likely be dark.

Still, increasing light levels worked half the time, so maybe you just need to increase your lucidity, or concentrate harder on the light level, and get your visual cortex working a little harder. Ramping up the brightness gradually might also be easier than suddenly turning the lights on.

Brightness is what I'm currently working on in my dreams as well. Last night I was faced with this issue, and at first only succeeded in making stars in the night sky more bright. Finally I said out loud "the sun will rise in one minute," and it did! It got brighter pretty quickly, and after that everything seemed not only lighter, but a lot clearer and more real as well.

Almost all of my dreams both lucid and non-lucid happen at night. Brightness however has never been a problem because it is always that movie quality non-night in which there is no sun but everything is still perfectly clear and visible, like under a full moon. I will say, though that the idea that light levels are uncontrollable in dreams is wrong. I have made the sun rise and it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I just normally don't bother with the light as it isn't important to me.
