Their are TONS of books on spirit guides. I suggest reading one for more clarification than you'll get off this website.

Most say they're just people who are living in the same place where you're dead relatives are (the other side), and are such a good friend to you that they've agreed to help you out in this life (perhaps you helped them out in an other life).
