Changing Light Levels

I had a very weird experience the other day - after a long dream i became lucid on a very dark floor of some TV station. The darkness was uncomfortable and even spooky. Suddenly I had a crazy idea, I dont know where it came from - I opened my eyes again. They were already open, but I opened them again, from the "open" position Instantly the darkeness was gone and the whole floor was bathed in bright sunlight, although I'm fairly sure there were no windows. A friendly DC was waiting by some door and told me to sit down and I felt she was gonna tell me something important. Then I woke up. The change wasnt in just light levels - the entire atmosphere of the dream changed - before I was running from police with a bag of guns, seeking safety in the TV station. After opening my eyes that was gone... This is pretty interesting, someone should try that and see if it works for them as well.

In a LD I jumped as high as i could then when i felt i was going to start faling down i jumped again in mid air and continued rising. I havent had any problem with changing light levels. Light switches work fine.

[/b] this is very interesting... research shows that increasing the overall illumination in a dreamsetting can be very difficult, possibly because the regions of the brain that control light perception are dormant when you are sleeping... ive read about people flicking light switches that do not work, or the light going on but the overall illumination not being affected, or being affected very little. It seems the concensus among the lucid dreaming community that increasing light levels is very dificult, particularly for those just starting out... this is very good that you were able to do this. As for the light levels affecting the emotion/mood of the dream of course this is true... nightmares very rarely take place in a well lit scene. this is a very intriguing post, and i will have to test this in my dreams tonite (or tomorow if i am unlucky )

I had one LD, which I barely remember, in which is was pretty dark and dreary, and I just though wouldn't it be nice to have the light level go up, and it got a bit brighter. Then I tried doing a major increase and woke up becasue I wasn't stable. But i've had a similar experience with LD flying too, and yet I can't even stay lucid for more than a few seconds most of the time. Anyways opening your eyes again sound like a good idea for increasing levels, I will have to try it.

Opening the eyes again is, if I remember correctly, very much along the lines of what you should supposedly do to open your third eye. It's fitting that this came with an increase in clarity.

I've tried to do the same thing in a LD tonight. Although I couldnt completely open my eyes again, I widened them and that significantly increased the amount of light in a dream.

hmm thats good wish i knew that last night i had a lucid dream i wanted it to go brighter by spinning but it failed i will try that next time I hate it when the lights dont work often they dont go on or are dimmed i think once they went on normaly but why dont digital clocks work in our dreams?

i wouldnt want to try it since there may be a chance that you may open your real eyes and not your dream eyes

I had a lucid dream once where I went into my grandmother's room and saw that the window was actually a mirror. I went into this mirror and was spit back out. Everything was then reversed. I then went through the mirror with my eyes closed hoping to come to a brighter and more peaceful setting. When I opened them, I was in my other house yet it was still dark. I stepped outside and started shouting "More light!" I did this numerous times and could not get the light levels any brighter even though I believed that I could change the lighting. I will try your idea next time it is too dark to enjoy the dream.

Last night I was awakened by something. I don't quite remember what it was, but I did a reality check to make sure I was awake. I was. A few seconds later I was still sitting up and decided to do another one. I was asleep? Yes I was asleep, but in the same position in the same room. I had no recollection of falling asleep a few seconds before. This was kind of creepy and the darkness wasn't helping. I remembered to try and open my eyes again even though they were open. Suddenly, I was staring at a big bright light. This light gradually faded away so I decided to do another reality check. I was awake some how even though I was still sitting up. Anyways I couldn't get back to sleep for a while...

hello all, i am nate; this is my first post. anyway, i have had some trouble with the light, but it was not the tint, it was that i couldnt change night to day. i tried flipping a 'day' switch on the outside of my house, that didnt work. i tried imagining the world spinning into day time, but it only spun half way and then went back. i covered the moon with my hand and then moved it away expecting the sun but it only turned orange and then went back. it's as if i could half way change it but it always went back. do you think this is because i was in a different stage of sleep that was keeping it dark?

[/b] Most people have trouble changing light, including me. You might want to try this "eye opening" technique and post your results.

I never try to change light levels physically or with machinery like light-switches and such. If ever I find a window, I look outside and think that it should be day and it just becomes day, then I just pass through the window into day, and if I want to go back into the house, then it's usually light once I get back in.
