Random Sound Effects

I was watching a video game, but while the game was being played, the creator of the game was explaining how the sound effects were added.

I think there was a monkey with two large, squarish guns. They looked like blocks.

The creator of the game said that random noises were paired with different aspects of the game without regard to whether or not they were appropriate sounds for a given event, but he said it actually worked out better that way.

The guns made an appropriate sound, which I believe was my way of subconsciously proving that this odd method of chooosing sound effects really did prove to be very good, if not the best way to choose sound effects.
