    1. Kangaroo University

I'm in London, sitting in my mum's kitchen and we are talking about plants. It is a beautiful sunny day but all of a sudden there is an ear-splitting mechanical roar and everything is thrown into shadow. We look outside and a large wooden aeroplane is gliding low over the city, primitive but armed. My dad and brothers are excited, and start trying to name it, but I am terrified so I teleport back to Brighton (the city where I live) and find myself at university.

The day has ended, but a large group of people remain on campus, chatting, drinking, smoking and flirting in the summer twilight. Then it gets a bit too late, and we realise there are no buses so we will have to walk the few miles into town. Walking through the building on our way out, we notice that the doors are unlocked and decide to peek into the offices.

I enter one at random, it has a single bed, some notebooks and a bunch of boys showing each other their bums (). The shelves are filled with dusty musical manuscripts and I realise that this is my tutor's office. On his desk, I see my name written on some post-it notes. Scrawled in black pen are a variety of responses to work that I have handed in, ranging from backhanded compliments to downright rude. There is a notebook with what looks like MSN messenger transcriptions written out my hand.

The conversations are between my tutor and a man I don't know, whose name began with D I think. They consist of brutal and honest evaluations of people on my course. Our marks and competencies are reeled off and examined, tinged with a kind of teenage sentimentality of parallel opinions and superfluous questions as to our motivations.

I want to leave but the guys in the room convince me to stay, they tell me to sleep in the bed if I'm tired. The idea is aggravating because I don't like the colour of the duvet, a dark wine-purple, and there are no pillows. I am also terrified that my tutor is going to come in and find us there.

We leave the room eventually and try to find somewhere to sleep on campus. It becomes like a video game, where we have to avoid the guards as we explore the terrain. Sudddenly the guards start turning into giant red cubes. They laugh and work together to trap us in rooms, then grow white web-like tentacles that absorb all the students, who have turned into green jelly creatures.
