    Myst

I tryied playing some Myst during my WBTB and it seems like it had a serious influence on my dream content and possibly my lucidity.

    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #122: Myst

I'm walking through an underground chamber with smooth stone walls and a very high ceiling. I hop up onto a ledge and start walking along it when it occurs to me that I'm probably dreaming.

The environment looks very sharp and my awareness feels high. I take the time to assess the visual quality of the scene -- it's completely lifelike. I walk on the ledge, which wraps around the entire room before leading me out through an exit door.

I'm in a narrower hallway now. There's a low tunnel on my right and I decide that it will lead me to the Colosseum for Task of the Year. As I'm watching it, though, I feel like the ceiling of the tunnel has gotten lower. Before I can dismiss this idea, it totally takes over and the tunnel's floor and ceiling close together, sealing it off completely.

I move on, passing through another broad, high chamber like the first one. This leads into a rougher-looking tunnel that cuts back and forth several times at 45-degree angles, very different from the clean, precise right angles of the earlier rooms.

The tunnel opens up at the end and I can see what looks like the inside of a baseball stadium. It's not exactly the Colosseum, but I feel like I can make it work. I manage to get just into the stadium area but
    the dream ends.

Hey, congrats on the lds! It's great you got out of the tunnel and into this stadium, I could see you employing some of those terrain modification skills or just looking down for a few seconds, until you could hear the Roman crowds. Come to think about it - there is no requirement that you should be in ancient Rome. The Colosseum has been there for about 2000 years, you could decide to enter in any age.

Man your determination is dangerous! By the time I get to read those entries you've been generating, you will probably have completed another TOTY! Already looking forward the next one!

Also very cool you used Myst to influence your dreams and possibly induce an ld.

That's funny, I hadn't even thought about kicking ass in the Colosseum present day! Lots of options there. I figure if I try for long enough I ought to be able to find some Colosseum in some period of time and then find somebody that needs killing.

Thanks for the compliment on my sheer obsessiveness! Now to turn this into some more results!

I was pleased the idea with Myst bore some fruit. I had a theory that engaging critical thinking and logic during the WBTB (particularly in a dreamlike environment like Myst) would be perfect to put me into a lucid dreaming frame of mind. It's just one data point, but I was very encouraged by the results!

Now that you have expanded the range of options, I am twice as curious what kind of scenario you will come up with.

It will be interesting to see if this works on a consistent basis. By the way, every once in a while I daydream about someone developing a lucid induction game. Maybe each person can use a simple editor to customize their own place like high school, work, etc., populate it with DS DCs and objects, then just walk around, click RC button until the meter reaches 100 percent, gather books/scrolls that help you recall tasks and then go on completing these tasks. Playing a game like this must result in lucidity or at least some good task oriented dreams. I got UDK a while ago to try out drawing my dreams but I can't seem to get the hang of all the buttons there. Probably should try again, although I am far from developing anything more than a few objects.

Yeah, I'm interested to see how it works going forward. Plus, I get to play video games during WBTB so what's not to like?

That is a great idea! I'd toyed with the idea of how cool a game about lucid dreaming would/could be but I hadn't considered how much customizability might help if someone was using it as an induction tool. I had just been thinking of how much fun it'd be, not how useful.

So are you into game development, or is the UDK a more mainstream thing than I'd realized these days? This is a big interest of mine, so it's cool to hear you casually mention the UDK.

Nope, just a recent interest of mine. I got it to try to "take pictures" of my dreams, but of course this would take ages. I have tried drawing but it also takes forever. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience to learn a new program at the moment. I think I might give it another try at some point in the future to at least recreate a pic of my school? The software is free for noncommercial use, so you can have a look. And of course if you ever develop an ld game and get very rich, don't forget to still ld.
