    1. The Substitutes

08-25-2012 -- [Man, the dreams have been great, recently. And several connected to the dream before, as well. This one was shorter and sweeter, from the two or three hours I slept after waking from the first one of the night and writing it down.]

I am in a high school classroom, and it feels like after lunch, just a couple of periods to go in the day. I have a full schedule of six classes, but for this fifth one, the teacher is out for the day, but instead of one sub, we seem to have three, wandering in and out of the classroom.

I go to take my seat, near the left side of the classroom, toward the front, and find the girl at the desk behind me has a ton of stuff spread everywhere, and in my way. I start picking up some of her stuff and moving it neatly under her desk, instead of spread out over mine, so I can sit down. A couple of the other students are asking me why I insist on sitting there, anyway. I have no idea why, it is just where I always sit.

One sub is an earnest sort of guy, vaguely interesting. Another is kind of like Mr. Ingrassi, and is thought of as mean and unfriendly. [Though I personally found Ingrassi to be a great guy. When he subbed in one of my classes back in Junior High and someone peeled up a piece of worn floor tile and chucked it at the back of my head, he told the guy off, sent me to the nurse, and we became friends.] The third, I was shocked to find out, was Jennifer from the Adventurers Club.

Suddenly she is in the room, talking to us about WW II, and relating a great personal anecdote, except I know she is nowhere near old enough to have a personal story from that war. All the students like her, but after class ends, I overhear her talking to a woman about how uncomfortable she is, and how she is not ready for this yet. The woman reminds her she was warned at the meeting in the Adventurers Club (in the dream Murder at the Adventurers Club, which should be the one above this in my dream journal) that she could be thrown in front of a class this quickly, if they needed her. I am amazed with how nervous she was that it didn't show, but after all, she is an actress.

Anyway, I head back to the classroom for the sixth class of the day, and it is the same classroom, and another substitute. Some of the other students are worried that Jennifer disappeared, and are asking about her, and the sub tells them not to worry about things that are not their concern. Not helpful at all. I tell them she is fine, but is barely getting started on her teaching career.

The teacher is disappointed about how dirty the classroom is, and is assigning chores for us to clean the place up. He assigns six or seven other students to other tasks before he tells me to weed the floor. I glance down, and there are indeed tufts of weed pushing through the tile floor here and there. As I bend down to start pulling weeds, and he assigns another student to walk the class dog, Roxie and Patches come running up to me and barking and licking me.

I think fast, and figure with a sub I can make an excuse about the dogs being friends of the class dog, but in truth I have no idea why they are here. I grab them both by their collars and start to drag them from the room, and the sub tells me he would normally be upset, but the teacher had left a note about dogs in the classroom. I say nothing, but know these dogs were not the ones the note was about.

My first thought was to stick the dogs in my car until this last class finished and I could drive them home, but I realize even with the window cracked, I can't do that to them in this heat. I am approaching the car, which at first seems to be my Galant, but both the truck and the hood are open, and I am afraid somebody has broken in and robbed me. I also wonder if the dogs snuck into the car, and somebody breaking in is how they got to the school in the first place.

But as I get closer to the car it is becoming larger and larger until it is about the size of a mobile home, and I find a bunch of people inside. It is filled with the various people who are always visiting at Rosemary's house, all the folks who annoy me so much. The air is running full blast, and they are playing some sort of odd football game inside my new vehicle! I find out the dogs had accompanied Shannon or the oldish, white haired guy, and then went running out to find me when they opened the doors to have more room for the game.

It seems they helped bring the vehicle here, and saw no reason they couldn't stay and play games in it while I finished my last class of the day. I don't like it, and feel they are wasting my gas running the air so much with all the doors open, but I am willing to put up with it for one day, since they did help bring it here. But when they indicate that they plan to be 'camping out' in it everyday, and one heavy black girl starts yelling about how I am so selfish in one of those hood-style fashions, I have had enough, and order them all out. Talk about taking things too far! I push them out and start back across the street to the classroom.

I never manage to get there. As I approach the corner (I'm kitty-corner across from the classroom) one of those crane-like vehicles with the basket for changing street lights and such comes rolling by. It is getting very dark, its lights aren't on, and it seems somehow it has come to life, and is trying to run people down.

I'm not too worried or excited, but I do have to make my way through the now panicking crowds across the first street (classroom is on the NE corner, I started on the SW corner, and first crossed to the NW corner). Before I can move across to the second street I am approached by a nicely dressed young guy who seems quite conservative in dress. I bump into him, and somehow knock off a hat or controlling wig, and suddenly he has waist-length hair hanging down his back. I now recognize him as Maddie's boyfriend from Facebook, and somehow he was trapped into being something he was not, and by releasing his hair I have freed him to be himself again. He is very happy.

[I have no problem with guys with long hair, and don't think there is anything wrong with it, but you have to admit that in current times such long hair is not considered a conservative trait. No idea where that part of the dream came from.]
