That really sucks, Iris. I've heard a lot of stories like that, they're depressing. It kind of reminds me of A Scanner Darkly (one of my favorite movies, haven't ever read the book).
While I understand where you're coming from, your son is in the minority. Cannabis works really well for some people, and does that to others. Look at all the medical marijuana users who really need it. It has a good and a bad side, and most people only get to see one side or the other instead of both. Psychedelics like weed (it's a little psychedelic), LSD, and others, are really mind bending. They bring out stuff buried deep in your mind, for instance: if you're creative, you can get more creative, if you're depressed, you can get more depressed, like eating? oh boy are you gonna eat, have some ghosts from the past buried under the surface? prepare to face them, and if you're lazy, you'll get way lazier. Of course, if you have some kind of psychosis buried under the surface, that gets drawn out too.
Take me for example, I had some anxiety issues I didn't really know I had. They were always there but I hadn't realized it. I started smoking pot and every time I would have an anxiety attack. I quit smoking, but upon doing some research, I found out that only happens to people who already have anxiety. So, I go to therapy, read a bunch of books, and do a lot of thinking, and BAM, anxiety gone. Now I can smoke whenever, although the nice thing is that, for me, whenever I'm smoking too much I feel bad whenever I get high and thus stop smoking.
But it effects everyone differently. I feel sorry for you and your son, I have relatives who messed their lives up considerably with drugs (I'm pretty sure one of my uncles smokes meth), so I can relate. Still, Carl Sagan smoked a lot of weed, it worked out pretty well for him Anyway, I don't advise anyone does ANY drugs, including OTC and prescription ones, until they have researched them thoroughly. Don't even drink coffee until you research caffiene! Not that caffiene is that bad, it's fairly safe, but if you're getting addicted to something you had better read up on it first, you know?
But anyway WE'RE REALLY OFF TOPIC NOW haha. The point is, don't do drugs while you Astral Project if you can't even do it sober. And there's no real reason to do it all, you're already traveling outside you're body, that's trippy enough, I think.
