Your perception is altered, you don't see with your physical eyes but with your mind. If you visit an area that you know nothing about, the images are blurry and shapeless. You can often get attacked by astral creatures like in the book "Techniques of astral combat". Unlike when you are lucid dreaming, you can't just will these creatures away, you have to fight them or run. But you may not even see them properly, or the world around for that matter, like I said you need some preliminary knowledge to recognise the environment and you need knowledge of the entities to be able to shape them and attack them. In that book the technique described for achieving astral projection is quite similar to the WILD technique for a lucid dream, they just call it "trance induction technique" and they speak nothing of lucid dreaming. In the books where both lucid dreaming and astral projection are seen as existent, it is said you can use lucid dreaming to go into an AP, one way is to climb a tall building and jump off, willing yourself out of the body. There are also visualisation techniques, it is said that if you imagine a well and then you imagine yourself falling down into it and plunging into the bottom you can induce an OBE. There is also the famous technique by Robert Monroe, but it's a little bit complicated, even if stated to be effective. The Monroe Institue has also released some audio cds that can help induce lucid dreaming and astral projection, just search "hemi-sync", it's the technology used in the audios.
