Well, it really depends on what you mean by "sense things". I'm not sure what you mean... but I'll take a guess. I'm assuming you mean sight, hearing, etc? That's a very good question. Obviously, none of this information can be verified yet, but I will give my interpretation on what happens.
Basically, everyone experiences something different during astral projection. Your mind fabricates the senses- energy conversion, if you will, and turns it into an experience you can relate to. Very similar to lucid dreaming, none of what you see exists as you see it, but your mind converts it into something you can understand. For example, in an OBE, I find that if I try to look at my hands, they melt away after a while. That is my mind trying to fabricate something that is not there, but that I know how it should appear. I've seen my hands millions of times. But without them actually being there, my mind has to create hands. But there is so much going on, that after a few seconds, my hands start to melt away.
This is one of many things that differentiate an OBE from a lucid dream. In a lucid dream, I have no problem seeing my hands, or anything else for that matter. Everything remains constant. I have yet to find out why that is, I just know that it is.
But an OBE, as far as I theorize, is your minds interpretation of the astral plane(s). I think communication between projectors is also a higher form of communication, that once again our CONSCIOUS minds are not able to process, because we are not acustomed to anything more than spoken or written communication (in general). So our subconscious converts it into something we can understand- words.
There are obviously many other examples of this, that I won't take the time to go into at this moment, but I hope that sort of clears it up a little for you. Again, I don't claim any of this to be fact, just my interpretation on it
