I think that part of what makes this hard, is the part of ourselves that is capable of sharing in a dream doesn't care very much about random passwords. The password needs to have content that is metaphorically relevant to the meaning of the dream. This is why I typically suggest having a philosophical question in mind. All of my precognitive dreams started out as metaphors for answering those kinds of questions, with the images being drawn from the next day, and the time-travel element being somewhat incidental. Then my precognitive experiences evolved into sharing experiences, after I observed that there's always at least a small element of sharing involved, and moved in that direction more. The point is to get as much of yourself invested in the dream as possible, your intellect doesn't have nearly as much leverage by itself.

My way doesn't involve lucid dreaming for the most part. The reason is I'm not consciously capable of creating a shared dream lucidly, so I step back and let our subconscious handle it. For me being lucid in the sense of controlling the dream environment would interfere with that. I think that even the people that share dreams lucidly are relying on the subconscious part also, they don't by themselves actually know how to 'find' the other person and coordinate with them, even though they're involved in the process.
Here's one of my main dreams from last night, for anyone interested.
I'm looking through the window of a bus in the California capital, which by implication must be Sacramento, though I've never been downtown and it doesn't feel that way very much. Everything is a little bit blurry and has a bluish tint. The dome of the capitol building is tilted like its falling over. Nearby is a hotel, and parked in front of it is a bus with four levels to it. Maybe its there to provide auxiliary rooms because the hotel is full. I point out this bus to people sitting around me, because as you would imagine this is a pretty tall bus.
Both buses start moving, and I lose sight of the tall one. (This would represent a change in context, I'm not dreaming about quite the same thoughts in relation to quite the same people any more.) My bus goes into a garage-like room that has dogs and/or children in it. Two women are in charge in the room, one of them named Carla. The bus crashes into a wall. I go to the front of the bus and the driver isn't there. I'm concerned that the bus might be on top of someone, and ask Carla if she wants me to back the bus up. She doesn't answer. I'm pissed at her that she doesn't answer, since it seems possible that someone is dying under the bus. They succeed in moving the bus by pushing it from the outside, but it lurches in a way that would be destructive to anything that its on top of. Afterwards she still won't talk to me about what happened, or about her refusal to answer. I try to get my mom to talk to her about it.
The room is like a school or daycare, and we pay them once a month. The bill somehow depends on temperature, and cost's more when its hotter (like an air conditioning bill I guess). On one of the bills my wife had written 45 by mistake for the temperature, which is pretty hot and cost us a lot. She wants to know why the two women didn't catch the error. They say they overlooked it, but it seems that every time the two woman who do the accounting are Democrats, the budget of a particular university gets the shaft. (This brings the story back to the original image of the tilted capitol building dome. Somehow we're affiliated with that university, apparently. I've forgotten which one it is, but its a California state university and its not Stanford or Berkeley.) The women deny this but seem pleased by it. In a side conversation, one of the women mentions that they're going to get better or more luxurious cars soon. She says to the person she's talking to, "trust me". I interject, 'trust you how, when you can't even be trusted to answer when I ask about something important like moving the bus?'
I pretty much understand this dream in terms of my own life and people around me. The only thing that doesn't quite fit is there seems to be a British element to it. We use Fahrenheit in California and never think in Celsius, though the temperatures are clearly recorded in Celsius. We also don't have double decker buses here.
Were this a 'shared dream' of the kind I call shared dreaming, someone in this discussion would say that they to dreamed of a multi-level bus the previous night, or something like that. It would be an unlikely enough coincidence to be regarded as evidence in their minds, while leaving at least some small room for doubt. Its not necessary for us to have had the two dreams at the same time, the dreams can be connected by the conversation. So for instance, instead of sharing my dream from last night, I almost related a precognitive dream from a few years ago, to illustrate how it spoke to an unrelated philosophical question having to do with courage. Maybe the other person would have had a dream with remarkably similar images in it, that seemed like it might be shared, and that's what encouraged them to post on the topic. Or maybe not, I'm just trying to give a general sense of the way that it works when it does work, which seems to be about half the time. Maybe you can see why its hard to set up a conventional controlled experiment such as a person would use in a clinical study. I think that a successful controlled experiment is probably possible, just not easy enough to organize and pull off that one of us is very likely to be able to do it.
