      Meditation and Sleep

Is it possible that if you were to enter a deep meditative state that it could---considering the similarities to a sleeping state---you would actually need less sleep? And maybe even not have to sleep at all and just meditate?

Basically im asking, is there any case where meditation might act as a substitute for sleep?

Maybe even achieve 24 hour consciousness?

      i doubt it.

the act of sleeping from a physical point is nothing more then a time for your body to recover. During sleep certain things are taking place to make this happen. I doubt meditation puts the body into the same restoritive state.

I've read webpages in which one claims it's possible. Here's the link and see CHI SLEEP at the bottom.

Its possible to be able to only sleep 4 hours every night with certain types of training, but NO sleep is probably out of the question. Theres no way even a lower theta state can substitute for delta. With no sleep for as little as five days messes with your mind, quickly resulting in being institutionalized.

I think your best bet would be to look for a way to still be slightly conscious in a way, while being in a lower delta state.
