      The Significancce of 2012

      http://www.levity.com/eschaton/Why2012.html

To sum it up if you're illiterate, the Mayans were extremely advanced astrologists and predicted a point in time at the end of their calendar when our sun will reach the direct center of the galaxy on Winter Solstice.

Supposedly this will correspond with the ascension of the human race into a new world age, one less towards ignorance and hatred, and more towards enlightenment and cooperation.

Yeah, the Mayans were really great astrologers for their age. But the end of the world theory had almost NIL to do with that astrological calendar. Basically, they had one calendar based on the moon and sun and whatnot, almost identical to our modern calendar and very accurate, and then they had a second, religous calendar based on nothing whatsoever that I'm aware of, and of a different lenght than the normal calendar. Then, they assumed that the last time the religous calendar and the normal one had a new year beginning on the same day, the world MUST have started. And the next time such a thing happens, the world will end. Yeah. Real scientific-like. Genius, truly.

I think it was EDIT: Docthory who summed it up so nicely:

Now, just so's ya know, the topics been debated before. See here:
      2012 v1.0

And I stick to my previous conclusion:
You can all go wait for the world to end. I'll raid your house while you're out waiting for the sky to fall.

Idiot, the Mayans didn't say the world would end, it would simply be a new world age. They weren't talking about the end of the world... Why would the end of a calendar be the end of the world? I don't believe that. I do believe what the Hopi and the Mayans have in common is predicting a great upheaval during this time period, with Hopi prophecies being eerily accurate.

ie. The end of the world as we know it - would be more accurate.

OH. So the world isn't ENDING, they're just predicting that there will be a significant amount of change. And of course, what better way than to just slap it on some day that happens to align both your calendars? Sounds VERY reasonable to me.

Good point, but hopefully the year is quite boring and uneventful
Then again, nothing stops people from MAKING it eventful

According to both the Hopi and the Mayans this would be a transition to an enlightened society. After a great purification, obviously (WWIII).

Are you surprised to see the price of crude rising as demand outstrips supply?

Are you surprised to see the Chinese conducting military operations with the Russians?

Are you surprised we still haven't left Iraq?

Things have been set in motion which cannot be stopped.

      Don't be surprised this winter.

America is going to pay for it's ignorance.

Never mind any dumb obscure prophecies, I figure with Captain War in the White House, the world will be over by 2012 anyway. Or at least swarmed with nuclear fallout mutants.

Well, if Bush declares more wars, we may be lucky to make it to 2012... I see no big deal with that year, though. I'm more interested in 2039.

Anyways, if the world as we know it is definitely going to end soon, worrying about it would do nothing useful. Might as well see how much farther we can get till then. The end is inevitable, it's only a question of time. Isn't that a happy thought

      Ha, guess what.

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US IS GOING TO DIE

      MAYBE TOMORROW

      MAYBE YOU

      MAYBE ME

      DIE!!

2012 is useless. Our worlds end on their own, naturally.

Haha. I meant each of our worlds, not like we have a couple different ones going on at the same time.

When you die, something big happens. Don't ask me what, but I can tell you that you definitely don't keep living.

      End of the World

Seems to be alot of talk about the end of the world. There is statistical probability that the world will end in the next 2 centuries. If anyone wants more info on Eschatology (the study of the end of the world) heres a link that talks about different books that have been written on it.

      http://www.johnreilly.info/esch.htm
Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them.

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.

Life isn't a mystery to be solved, but a reality to expierence.

      Thanks for the link, Manifold.

As I understand it, 2012 is quite the pivotal year. I already explained it in short here, and I'm too lazy to even cut and paste right now, so click away...

Oh, and before I forget, I can't believe I'm agreeing with docthory of all people, but like he said:

Yuh know, Nostradamus said the world would be over by now. It would be nice if the 2012 prophecy came true and the world faced a massive consciousness shift for the better, but I personally don't believe it will happen. There's been too many prophecies that just plain haven't come true for me to buy into this one. Does anyone remember the guy who said this same thing would happen in 1998? "But only if the world is ready," a convenient safeguard.

No. I'm not really surprised about any of this. But I hardly expect that it's going to cause the world to end. New fuel types are on the market, so rising crude costs, while annoying and bothersome, and certainly expensive for the moment, aren't going to cause world-wide panic.
Why haven't we left Iraq? Simple. Their military isn't sufficiently trained to conduct the peace-keeping operations inside Iraq. Therefore, US troops are staying there to train Iraqi soldiers and keep the peace until the Iraqis are ready to do it themselves. If we pull out now, it'll just be Somalia all over again.

"It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt." -Mark Twain

Sheesh. I'm not exactly at the head of the Bush Parade, but saying something like "America is going to pay for its ignorance" is just a useless inflammatory remark that really states nothing. I may not agree with many of the policies or actions of the current administration, but I am an American, and I have to take offense to that.

That Mark Twain quote definitely fits.
