It is very hard to distinguish between a nightmare and an Out of Body Experience. When I was a child I was taken, inside an old cardboard tomato box, through my closet. All I remember of the place was darkness and flames. I always thought it was a nightmare, but the symptoms are too similar to an OBE, of which many children are particularly susceptible. What you are describing to me sounds like some version of sleep paralysis, a sure sign of a possible AP. It would help if you would go back over the experience and note any strange sights, sounds, or lights you saw. That will give you the final clue.
In my opinion, limited in knowledge as I am, everything you say sounds like an AP, and I am a believer in it. I have read far too many books by different authors in different time periods of differing faiths all describing the same thing to think its fake. To me that would be like saying there is no life after death. I firmly believe in a spiritual realm, and at this point in my life I am seeking the truth. I think its apt that the landscape of my 7th chakra, when I meditated on them and went through each one, turned out to be a lighthouse, at night, shining a bright beam on all the other landscapes of my chakras.
My advice? Start keeping a thorough dream journal and read books by Robert Monroe, William Buhlman, Albert Taylor, Dianne Morrissey and others, all describing their and others experiences of AP. You can compare the descriptions of others to your own, and determine if you are having an OBE or have had one.
