SP can occur while going to sleep or waking up.

I woke up in SP several times before I knew what it was. I have experience SP 5-6 times. Two of the times I actually tried to get there. Nothing scary about it. After felling like I kind of sunk into my bed, images floated by be, and I forgot I was in SP while I was watching the images. I didn't feel or hear anything, I was just watching the images go by. Then one of them stopped in front of me and grew bigger and bigger untill I was in it. I forgot I was WILDing and was in SP, so I entered a regular non-lucid dream :P
Same with the other time I tried to get to SP, I forgot I was WILDing and enter a ragular dream...Jeeze, I have to start getting better at remembering.
Three of the other 4 times I woke up into SP from a nightmare. Now that WAS freaky. I didn't know what was going on, and then my nightmare started to fade in. The other time, when I knew about SP, I woke up in a nightmare. I was still scared, and got myself out of it, but not as much, since I at least knew what was going on. After I got out of it I was VERY annoyed at myself for chickening out. I could of just changed my nightmare.
So, waking up in SP is freaky, usually terrifying, because I don't figure out what is happening for a minute. But, if you try to get to SP, I don't think it is freaky at all. I did it at 4 in the morning in pitch black. Just got the images, no sounds or something touching me. I was laying on my side, so I didn't get the feeling of someone pressing down on your chest, which I did get the first time I got to SP while laying on my back. People say you get to SP faster on your back, but I got to it in 30 seconds laying on my side after I woke up at 4AM. It wasn't a DEILD, because I sat up to look at my clock. So if you are WILDing, there is nothing to be afraid of. Just count your breaths. Say in your head the number you are at as you inhale, and say "I'm dreaming" as you exhale.

I have never had any unpleasant feelings during SP. I find it quite comfortable.
Not to discount what you learnt in your class but I often experience SP when I try to WILD. And I know it is SP because one time my HH freaked me out so much I tried to wake myself up but of course I couldn't because I was paralysed and my body was alseep so I had to hold my breath to break the SP.
It is not common to experience sleep paralysis when you first go to sleep at night. Normally, you do not pass directly into REM when you are falling asleep. It is more common to experience it when waking up, since you often wake directly from REM.
This does not, however, mean that it is impossible to experience sleep paralysis when falling asleep, or from a WILD. When you interrupt your sleep, mess with your sleep schedule, or WILD, you leave the realm of typical sleep science. You are now in the realm of ABNORMAL, where almost anything is possible.
When you WILD, you maintain consciousness through the (hopefully brief) initial stages of falling asleep, and pass into REM while still conscious. This can easily, and frequently does trigger a Sleep Paralysis episode. You can experience Hypnagogic Hallucinations and Sleep Paralysis during a WILD. They are different things, and are often mistaken for each other around DV, but you can experience both during WILD.
Some sleep researchers can't seem to get their heads around this. We can consciously alter some aspects of our natural sleep patterns. This is what WILD is all about.
Feel free to give your DVA instructors a hard time about this, and tell them it was from me :P I've argued this with Shift, before.
I got this from shift, robot.
You should teach a WILD class or something. :D
I have somewhat enjoyable SP. I don't usually feel/hear anything, I just get a lot of weird vertigo, but at that point my HH is really great. I get these vivid plaid/crosshatching patterns in technicolor! I'm a huge WILD fan!
