Having a note
I have not once in my life had a lucid dream. I recall dreams okay. Some better than others, and it probably has to do with how well I sleep and how much I get. But I've tried several techniques in previous years to recognize a dream whilst in it. No luck. Dreams are just too real for me to recognize, even if it involves flying!
(By the way, my main technique has been a DILD and MILD, but since joining this forum, I've tried WILDs, but simply fall asleep before my body does.)
Anyway, last night, I wrote a large note which simply said, "I AM DREAMING". The note was on a regular sheet of plain paper, folded in half. I looked at the note and read it a couple of times, and then kept in close (under my pillow, actually). All in hopes that I would see the note in a dream. However, I don't remember seeing the note in any of my dreams. Is this really an effective method to induce a lucid dream?

It might be...
Sooner or later, you will see the note in your dreams. Just keep looking at it when you go to sleep, or through out the day. While your at it, do some Reality Checks!

You're doing autosuggestion, a trusted method for lucid dreaming. The act of writing it could further cement this. Good thinking.
The most important thing you can do at this stage is to keep it up. Don't fall away after a week or two of disappointment. Record dreams religiously as you have them. While the amount of sleep you get is important, nothing helps recall like a dream journal. If you haven't already, do regular reality checks.
Your first full, vivid lucid will have been worth twice any effort you might put into this venture. So, my only true advice is to keep trucking. Read as much as you can, both around here and from other sources. Keep experimenting and seeing what works best for you.
A wonderfully vague post I've made, but I hope it somehow helps. If you have any specific questions I'll try to give 'em a crack. :)
