      hypnagogic imagery question

I've had this experience a lot recently.
I wake up in the night, remember my dream (normally around 4am), go to the bathroom, fill in my dream journal and go back to bed.

I try to MILD, but find that I am too alert to just nod off, and it seems I start attempting a WILD by default.

So I see the lights, and then the odd static images appearing and dissapearing. All this time I'm conscious and aware that I'm waiting to dream. Then I'm watching some random dream scene. Almost like watching a black and white movie. Is this the HI?

But I'm not watching it in a detatched way. I'm never aware of the transition.
One second I'm watching the back of my eyes, the next I'm in this strange little mini dream, with no understanding of how I got there. It lasts for a very short time, then I'm back staring at the back of my eyes. After the mini-dream, I'm conscious of what I was up to again.

Anyone know whats going on? Is this normal.
Can anyone give me advice on how to get through this please?

      Yes this is HI.
      You could try Malac's method.

Basically the images disappear soon after you realise you're seeing them right?
Practice this, as soon as you realise, GRAB something in the Dreamscape. Anything you see. When you get this to work you should enter that dreamscape and then you can just stabilise the dream by RC's and looking at you hands and whatnot.

Is it just me or do people make stabilizing sound harder than it is?

Is that what Malmac was going on about.
Grabbing something during those brief dream flashes?

But the problem remains the same. Every time I have one its like I've dropped into them with no Idea on how I got there. I forget that I've been sitting in bed going 1...Im dreaming....2..im dreaming etc.

Maybe if they lasted longer the penny would drop.

Yeh that's basically what he was talking about. It's just that this is a different way of visualising. I spose it's visualising without forcing yourself to.
Hm, I'm wondering why you think it matters that you don't know how you got into them.... Do you mean that if you knew you could do it on purpose or what?

Yes, it's HH, but when you watch it, make sure that you don't move your eyes. Moving your eyes can chase away your WILD.

But like I said, problem is that I don't realise I'm watching HI, so don't know not to move my eyes.

I've found this really frustrating, so re-read Laberge.

Basically it says that watching HI is a very difficult way to get into a Lucid, and recommends a number of others.

One is to visualise an object which should end up incorporated in the Wild.
Malmacs fast grabs involved your own visualisation, instead of just relying on the HI.
One of the tutorials says this:
      4. If your thoughts become to abstract your at risk of loosing that concentration, Think logical. A way to keep the mind active is to and to bring on the hypnologic images is to imagine doing something that involves imagery, audible and tactile sensations (such as riding a bike, remember to scence anything such as the feel of the handlebars and the wind the sound of birds, etc.)

Maybe this helps you make that switch from spinning lights to a mini dream without losing your chain of thought.

The rest basically get you to concentrate on anything but the HI, counting, or the 61 point technique.

SO, have I answered my own question? Is watching generic HI a waste of time?

Not really, because watching it can help you turn it into a dreamscape. If you have awesome visualisation then you could skip that part and just see something. But I believe scenes and what not and visualising something behind your eyes is basically just complex HI.
