First you want to remember your dreams, since there's no point in LDings if you can't remember them. Then, do "reality checks" (look at your hands, pinch your nose, etc. to check if you're dreaming) in real life to make sure you aren't dreaming (it's pretty obvious you aren't, but it makes you do it when you're dreaming too).
That's where you want to start.
To add onto this; It's best if you increase your recall until you can remember at least one dream per night. It sounds hard, but it really isn't.
When you do start to use a technique, I recommend to choose one that fits your sleep schedule and your sleeping habits. Or just do what everyone else does and choose one that interests you. (That's always fun. )
EDIT: Also, like Jurence said, keep a DJ. It also helps (and is also fun), to reread previous dreams. This also helps you find a dream sign or two.
