the point of a WILD is actually to fall asleep. you HAVE to fall asleep but stay aware at the same time, yeah it's really confusing.
i think a better way to put it is to fall asleep and know that you are doing it, but DO NOT try to focus on your body too much unless that's helpful for you to fall asleep. just do what you normally do to go to bed, get comfy and let your dream come to you, don't chase it. there's no great difference between going to bed normally and WILDing, only that in a WILD you know when you finally fall asleep, and in order to dream you must be asleep.
this is information that i came across numerous times (in a single day) from people that claim they are very successful at the WILD technique, i tried about 3-4 times, then i came across this revelation and mixed with a WBTB i managed to have my first WILD today!
if you think staying awake works for you or has worked for you, than by all means do that, but i like i said i tried to stay awake thinking it was the correct way and all it did was put me in SP with no imagery at all intill i just gave up and fell totally asleep defeated.
