The key for me seems to be getting into prolonged REM while it is still dark outside. I guess the dawn, with all of it's noises like people driving down the road, birds chirping, dog and so on disturb my sleep.
That said, it is best for me anyway to get in bed around 10:30 or so, that way, my most active REM period starts at about 4:30 am which gives me about 2 hours or so.
This is a good plan.
