      WBTB or WILD problem

I'm not sure if this is a WBTB or WILD problem, but either way:

I've never had a lucid dream, but I'm still trying. One technique I've tried is waking up in the middle of the night, about 4-6 hours after I fell asleep. I'm pretty sure later is better for me, because I woke up from a dream last night I set my alarm. Anyway, I'm having trouble getting to the right alertness. Even if I walk around for a while, up to 20 minutes, I still fall asleep. I decided to count down from 100. 100...99....98....97...96..... then I'm asleep. If I stay up too long or wash my face with cold or luke-warm water, then I'm too awake and have trouble going to sleep. Any suggestions?

It might help if you take a few swallows of a caffeinated drink/soda. Don't drink too much.. just drink enough to help wake you up a little bit.

you say you have had a lucid dream that lasted less than a second. that doesnt really count as one, otherwise i'd have waayy more than 5. what you gotta do is rub your hands together or spin around in a circle to stabilize it.

I don't see where he said that about having an LD last less than a second but, in any case, I have to respectfully disagree.

If you realized that you were dreaming even if the dream ended right away.. I would still count that as a lucid dream (albeit a very short lived one). You still had a moment of lucidity.

Did the dream go black the second you realized you were dreaming? If so, that's still a direct result of your recognizing the lucid dream state.

Honestly it would be a "personal" decision as to whether you would count it as a lucid dream or not.

Either way.. you got a taste of lucidity and it's an experience to build on and learn from.

Uh, yea, that's in a different topic, right here. Anyway, it did go black after I realized the room didn't light up when I flipped the switch. I just got flashes of light and woke up. Anyway, I'll try the soda thing. My family pretty much only buys diet soda, but I could find caffeine somewhere I bet. Another problem I'm having is getting out of bed. Not because I can't, but because I don't want to. My mind votes and the majority chooses to going back to sleep. Which I end up doing. I'd also like to stay up for 30 minutes or so, but I need the sleep. I'm already slightly tired waking up as it is.

I feel like crap waking up 5-6 hours into my sleep. However, after a lucid I feel extremely refreshed, awake, and clear-minded. Don't give up, keep trying! ^_^ As I write this message, I am up 5 hours into my sleeping cycle hehe.

For staying awake during the WILD, do some math. Merely counting backwards requires little effort and, I would think, causes a loss of consciousness. Similar to visualising sheep jump over a fence.

Not sure about caffiene, not tried it. At the moment I am testing red wine, as the melatonin in it apparently prolongs and intensifies REM sleep.
