Visualization Improvement

I mostly want this to help induce dreaming. Are there any good techniques anyone has picked up? Is it mostly just experience? I can visualize pretty well when I'm going back to sleep. I can't however visualize well when I'm trying to go to sleep. (if that makes sense)
