Does anyone know what causes nightmares?

I need to know this because usually when i have nightmares i become lucid because of how bad it is and if i know how nightmares are caused i will beable to have them and become lucid.

P.s. If this is in the wrong forum please move it where ever it needs to be i thought this had a little something of attaining lucidity
If practice makes perfect and nobody is perfect then why practice?

yea, the scary movie thing should work wonders, because even if you arent really touched by it, and have no external symptoms that you are kinda scared, you subconcious will probibly turn that into a dream....

only problem is, i dont have any scary movies....

I'm gonna try the resident evil suggestion.. that used to work pretty good. Yeah nightmares were my #1 way of getting LD's, so if i don't get them, i don't LD.

I would highly recommend you give something else a try...making yourself have nightmares to get lucid dreams sounds like too much trouble. what else have you tried?

no, trust me... for some people its the best. I would still do it, but i lost my dream recall for some reason.

I do however still recall dreams, but sometimes not right away, i was starin at the floor today and remembered one from the morning.. weird

      umm...

the point of this thread was to talk about how to induce nightmares, because they are easily reconisable dreamsigns....at least, for some people...

      happy 4th, by the way....

Perhaps this is a myth but I find that cheese give nightmares, or at the very least, strange dreams.

I agree that nightmares help you achieve lucidity because often the overwhelming fear of imminent death brings you past the brink of "trying to survive." At some point you give up everything and accept that you are going to die. But then......... you don't ! You're only dreaming! And voila, you're in a lucid dream. My only problem with this is that you may wake up at this point.

I read in a book that nightmares are no different than normal dreams, in that they give insight into your subconscoius mind (i.e. thoughts and fears). In fact, danger and fear in dreams often means that you are living up to the challenges in your real life. So I don't think nightmares are necessarily negative or bad things.

Nightmares = not fun. I don't care about insight when I'm being chased by man-eating gophers, or Whoopey Goldberg.

I remember seeing something about Paperdoll being attracted by cheese muffins, and she causes nightmares of unspeakable pain to lucid dreaming newbies when she is in your head looking for those cheese muffins.

Discomfort (over heating, sweating, fever, stomach problems) all give me nightmares.

And occasionally too much game playing, etc

And I LOVE nightmares - because they are the surest for of lucidity for me. And they cease to be nightmares the moment 'it' (Whatever it is) attacks me anyway.
Kick it around, ride around on it, etc
If I'm smart enough, I change the dream to something more constructive
