      LILD? Lasers to Induce Lucidity?

I was smoking ajoint with a friend and discussing Lucid Dreaming when I suddenly got a pretty good Idea.

What if you would build a Sleeping Mask with laserlights shining into both your closed eyes. Would you be able to see the Laserdot through your closed eyelids?Guess it doesn't need to be for both eyes. 1 laserlight for 1 eye will probably also do the trick.

If you can than you could use it to hold on to while falling asleep. You could Visually focus your attention on the laserdot and fall asleep while doing so; Keeping in Mind that the Laserdot is a constant Reminder of your Lucid Intentions. This constant external signal could be either focussed on while entering a dream or picked up on later in a Dream; It will always be there.

Anyone in posession of one of those laserpens and willing to try this out? I'm going to buy one soon.
      How about that? Any thoughts?

Please, no one try this. Shining lasers into your eyes, even weak ones, hurt a lot and can cause temporary or permanent damage. It probably wouldn't do much damage if your eyes are closed, but what if you suddenly open them?

However, bright LEDs would probably be somewhat visible through closed eyelids, and they could work, as shown by devices like the NovaDreamer.

Think of this thread of a warning about what Your Brain On Drugs can come up with. I wouldn't like to impinge on anyones freedoms by telling them not to try this, of course. I'd just recommend learning Braille before doing so.

Just thought it was worth pointing out that AFAIK the NovaDreamer flashes the LEDs, which makes them much more visible - on the same sort of basis as lighthouses and flashing lights on police cars.

Well.. as the others have said, lasers WILL harm your eyes. LED's on the other hand won't, but take it from me, just having them "always on" or flashing constantly (not only when REMing) doesn't work very well. The mask I built just has two LED's blinking randomly & constantly, I can't even tell you how hard it is for me to try to get to sleep. The first night I tried them I wore them for maybe 10 or 15 minutes Then I couldn't stand it anymore, nevermind fall asleep, and I took it off. Well... my eyes then blinked for another 10 minutes after that, I'll tell you it's just a good thing I'm not epileptic, woulda been seizure salad for sure.

      smooches,

Stephen LaBerge, the one who wrote "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" already made something that sounds like what your talking about. It's called the NovaDreamer http://www.lucidity.com/novadreamer.html

Have you tried putting them on a timer?

      hahaha
      I know what you mean.
You get some pretty wierd ideas when your high.
Like shining lasers into your eyes xD

This one time, I was with my friend at his house and he has all of this art on the wall.
I looked at this sculpture of a naked lady and said to my friend,

"Hey, you know what? That would be a pretty cool suit to wear.

Then we laughed our asses off for about ten minutes afterwards.
      You're not an astronaut.

Okay I see your point . When you wake up and open your eyes that's gunna suck.

But another lightsource will do as long as it's strong enough to go through your closed eyelids and create 1 sharp dot of light on your eyelid.

Problem is you may never notice it in your dream even if you do use lasers (bad idea).

You don't see what is going on in the physical world - that part is shut off. I'm sure people who sleep with their eyes open don't actually see what is going on. But then again... I sometimes see lightning in my dream when a thunderstorm is approaching, but other times I'll sleep right through one, so this method isn't guaranteed to work all the time.

If there was some way to control it, or only have it go off for 10 seconds when you begin REM sleep, it would be great, otherwise I think it would be an annoyance.

Flashing lights could also induce a seizure if you aren't careful.
