Speaking from personal experience, the thing that causes me to become lucid the most is a combination of MILD and lots of reality checks. I do reality checks as often as it occurs to me, more the later it is in the day. When I'm going to sleep I often see hypnagogic imagery. Usually that means I will be asleep within 2-3 minutes, so I make it a point to tell myself that I am going to sleep and soon will be dreaming. This is what is most successful for me, resulting in roughly 1 lucid dream every 3 nights. I'll get better the more I practice, as will you. Remember to stick with it, because it is worth it in the end. Try to keep a dream journal, even if you only write down small fragments. Then read over those fragments a few times. When I do that I am very good at remembering more, and filling in the gaps. If you only remember what you were dreaming immediatly before you wake up, try remembering where you were before that. Play it backwards so to speak. One of the important things about keeping a dream journal, I think, is it lets your subconcious know that you are interested in your dreams. You WANT to remember them. I found the more I journaled the better my recall got. Lately I haven't really been keeping a dream journal like I should because I've been busy in real life. I've written in it 3 times in as many weeks. My recall has suffered as a result. It can take a lot of work to train yourself to get good, but you CAN do it and it IS worth it. I think so anyway.
