I've solely used the plug nose RC in all of my Lucid Dreams. It did take a while for my RCs to transition into my dreams, but I only did it passively and didn't assert much effort into it when I was first starting out. Like the others have said, you have to convince yourself that you are dreaming all the time until you prove yourself wrong with one of those techniques. Once you get into that habit, you'll begin to see results.
      Keep going.

They actually didn't say that, and I think for good reason.

A RC is a simple state test: ask yourself, "Is this a dream?" and then do a physical test (i.e., finger through palm, nose plug, checking a clock, etc.) to confirm that you are not dreaming; if the test fails, then you are not dreaming. It's that simple and ought to stay that way. It is important to do your RC sincerely, but there really is no need to convince yourself that you are dreaming... if that is even possible, of course. On top of that, doing a RC to prove that you are not dreaming after you've convinced yourself that you are dreaming seems like a bit of self-imposed cognative dissonance to me.

So, with RC's there is no need to convince yourself of anything; just ask the question and do the test sincerely and you are done... They really do work best when kept simple.
