Alright so this may have been said before but I tried it and holy shit it works wonders. So here goes: I've completely stopped masturbating! I'm on day 8 right now with no porn, masturbating, or orgasm and last night I had 4 lucid dreams, 4 in one night!!! I couldn't believe it. Basically ever since I stopped I have had better dream recall and throughout the day I seem to be more aware and do more reality checks. My memory has increased so much when it comes to lectures at class. There's this video called "Your brain on porn" that you all should watch, I don't have the link but if you google it you should find it.

Can you sum up the video for us? I watched most of it but I wasn't sure what the exact relation it had to lucid dreaming.

Also congrats on the 4 lucids in one night, hope you got everything you wanted to do done in that time.
So what your saying is basically if you stave off from sexual activity you are more likely to have a lucid dream... but why?

Well in relation to lucid dreaming the video doesn't say much but it's sort of explains what goes on in the brain when masturbation occurs, dopamine release and addiction symptoms. The reason that it increases your ability to lucid I think is related to your awareness, ever since I stopped I've just been much more aware of everything in my life, my memory has gotten better and I don't even know why I just know it has, I haven't yet looked up the scientific reason behind it.

But....its....fun....

On other matters, I guess it might help but I would say it's only a factor and that you just had a 'good' night, well done there though!

The only way I could think this would be a factor would be in terms of altered brain chemistry after masturbation, perhaps there's some hormone/endorphin kick that isn't conducive to lucid dreaming?

Yeah when you masturbate you produce dopamine and dopamine is the chemical required for addictions. In terms of porn, the more you watch it the more you find yourself wanting something more exciting. That is the dopamine talking, basically your used to the dopamine fix from regularly masturbating to a certain porn and the new one gives u more dopamine. Basically theres a 90 day challenge to completely reset your brain and dopamine levels and this is what I'm doing. Today is day 8 and I already feel changes, both physically and mentally.

Yeah it's changed mine drastically in the time of one week, I started a gym routine, started learning the guitar, studying more. All the time and energy I had put into masturbating has an actual use now haha and no problemo always willing to share any info I got.

Yes, it's like it suddenly dawned on me how important it is, and how easy it should be, to not yield to cravings. Now that I can recognise and understand what's happening when I get cravings and know the consequences, it all seems ridiculously easy to deal with. Thanks again, and I'm so glad I took the time to watch the videos, and I recommend all to watch them if you think you spend too much time watching porn, eating a lot of unhealthy food, etc.

Yeah even good things should be taken in moderation, too much of anything is bad, the main problem is if you stop you still get urges to masturbate, ive been dealing with a lot of them today -.- they are really hard to get rid of lol I usually run, go to the gym, take a cold shower for future reference if you will be attempting this.

The reason you're experiencing all these beneficial effects is probably due to something completely unrelated to masturbation, but what the heck, I've been wanting to stop for a while, and have tried several times, and even watched that video series prior in desperation, LOL. Do you find that it increases your non-lucid sexual dreams? Because not only are they awesome but can easily lead to lucids, so it may help in that way.
Also the time I made it a week (I cheated, masturbated, but no orgasm) my balls felt kind of strange so I guess it could increase awareness like that.

I never really saw any difference in my dreams other than in waking life, where I felt more refreshed and awake and almost more confident in life if I was holding off.

I would agree that not masturbating increases awareness and memory (for a while), but I don't think I would peg dopamine as being responsible for this. Increased dopamine means increased focus, awareness, and better memory. How can a lack or lower amount of dopamine cause you to exhibit the signs of higher amounts of dopamine? Ignoring the fact that many other hormones and neurotransmitters are involved in masturbation/orgasm, it's not as simple as pegging something to a neurotransmitter because the same neurotransmitter plays different functions in different parts of the brain. There are D1 receptors, D2, D3, D4, and D5. Dopamine plays several roles and causes different behavioral reactions in just the frontal lobe alone. I think it's safe to say the deficits suffered from over-masturbation come from a multitude of factors. That being said, I'm interested in what those factors are.

I didn't understand everything you wrote, but I think it's the roller-coaster effect that is the reason. You get often high on dopamine by masturbating a lot, but then the roller-coaster goes down some time after you've had your dopamine, and the withdrawal is really bad since you're masturbating so often (if the roller-coaster goes up a lot, it also needs to go down a lot to maintain balance. While masturbating, the roller-coaster goes up. While not masturbating, it goes down.) Since you're usually further down than you would if you hadn't been masturbating excessively, you get worse memory than if you didn't because then the roller-coaster would be at a more constant and stable level. That's what I'm thinking, anyway. It seems logical to me. Also, please note that when I say 'you', I'm not actually referring to you, I know of course nothing about your masturbation habits :P And please, just ask if there's something about what I said that's unclear or if there's something you didn't understand.

what the video is saying all your actions and decisions are commanded by your mind seeking the feeling it gets as a result of the brain producing "dopamine" and releasing it in the brain. And its saying the biggest things that trigger the most dopamine which is what humans are after is things like sex and orgasim, extreme sport, adreline rush, food etc etc. Its also saying how if you keep relying on anyone source for dopamine e.g porn, orgasim, masterbation etc it will make the receptors in your brain num and damages the receptors required to recieve the released dopamine, so it only recieves limited amount of dopamine. Theres only 2 ways to get more dopamine at this point. One way is to get more dopamine is to find a new source which is more exciting or makes you happier, e.g you might play video games then when you had enough your sub councious is looking for the next thing which would give it higher level dopamine then playing games, Might be eating food, seeing friends, playing with pet etc. But your sub councious woint go back to video game at least after searchign for a better source. e.g if you masterbate when your done, you woint want to masterbate and urge woint come up for a little while at least, but if suddenly a hot girl came layed next to you could do it straight away and your brain gets triggered cuz it recognises there oppertunity for much higher dopamine release then just masterbation. 2nd option is not to do the activity for some time, depending of how much dopamine you get from the source determines how much time is required for the urge to come up again where the mind seeks dopamine from that source. The higher the reward the less time its required.

So what the other guy is trying to say with masterbation is, that masterbation provides amongst highest possible release of dopamine, so if you masterbate and go to bed LD isnt exactly big on the sub-counciouse mind regardless of how much you want it counciously, so it reduces your chances of success. But if you stop masterbating your mind is desperate for the feeling it gets when dopamine is released, so at that point it recognises LD as a good potential source, where if you have the support of your subcouncious inorder to achieve LD it will significantly increase your chances. i tried it after a drought and it worked will try again tonight, but basically thats the link between the video and LD

Masturbating alone obviously isn't as bad as masturbating with porn, but regardless of porn use, if you spend a lot of time masturbating, you'll notice how much "extra" time you get when you abstain from it. I'm at day 10 now, but it's long since I started realising how much time I used to spend masturbating/watching porn.

I can testify that it is worth taking a break- You feel better overall, more refreshed in the mornings, more energized, almost more cleaner in a way. My attention goes up I find too. Plus, when you finally do give in, it's much better after 2 weeks then doing it after 2 days. Also, the feeling of wanting it for days is better than recovering from it too.

The main point of not doing it is to basically freshen up your brain- wanking takes a lot out of your brain in terms of whatever chemicals and stuff are used while dreaming. If you stockpile (figure of speech) those chemicals you can have better, longer and probably more sexually inclined dreams than if you kept them at low levels wanking often.

Why do people say this? Your balls don't fill up with sperm until they explode or just leak semen. They die after a week or so, while still being replaced at a constant rate. You do have a maximum capacity. You produce sperm at a certain constant rate. Once you empty them one night, they fill up again over a few days. Once it's full, that's it.

I didn't say they would explode or whatever. But isn't it true that they are made, stored in the balls, and then used if necessary? I thought a wet dream was initiated when you're (almost) out of space.

I never insinuated that you said that, I was pointing out that fact to people in general. I would agree that wet dreams occur more often when you are more conscious of "fuller" balls. You wouldn't have sexually inclined dreams if it was the last thing on your mind, but I doubt the actual amount of semen in your balls actually contributes to your chances. If that was the case, priests could be having wet dreams everynight.

Yeah I've watched those videos, save the last ...3. And I've watched diaries and stuff of porn addicts and even stories of porn stars who were in the biz but quit (very impacting) AT THE TIME... Lol It got me motivated and I didn't play with myself for about 3 weeks, a new PB I think without counting going on holidays, etc. But after that I was just straight back where I was O.o. I think I'll have to build the inspiration again by rewatching that ish, and try to rationalise it out why it's better not to masturbate, at least this time theres the dimension of 'UPGRADES' lol if I stop, which are fun to look out for, even if I create them myself in a sort of placebo, it's fine. I've read a couple books on Qigong, the practice of cultivating this energy, and in multiple sources, it's said that orgasm expels a large fraction of your bodily energy, and it takes you a day to a week or so (depending on factors like age, health, lifestyle) to replace that lost energy. Do you ever feel 'drained' or somehow a littler weaker right after you orgasm?

I'm also reading "The Art of Dreaming" by Carlos Castaneda, which describes how dreaming requires a lot of energy, especially lucid dreaming. Don Juan says that normal people hardly dream because all their energy is spent throughout their waking lives, leaving nothing for the end of the day, but people who intend to dream can save energy in order to do so. I know I'm pulling non-scientific studies from different cultures here, but I thought I'd just share my own beliefs on the situation.

I've been a chronic masturbator since I was in my teens (22 now), also a pot smoker; obviously a terrible combination for someone trying to get into lucid dreaming. I've had a few, but they were during times where I layed off the weed and the porn, both of which are things I now see as quite consumptive of my energy. Well, I'm almost two weeks in and I haven't had any considerable problems, and while I don't know how it'll be when I'm e.g. three weeks in, I keep believing I'll make it. If you think you'll make it, you will.. But since perhaps the biggest advantage of not masturbating so far has been the improvement in my mood (no more turning hostile against my brother, etc. for no reason, generally more happy), I use that to rationalize why I should abstain from porn and masturbating. A short dopamine effect, or long lasting happiness?

So, to update my situation: I was able to record four dreams this morning in my journal; no lucidity, but a great step up from where I've been for a year! Usually I'd smoke myself to sleep and wake up with maybe a faint memory of a dream, not even bothering to write it down. Also, I haven't masturbated in a week now, and I'm feeling much more 'ready' to face the day; I just have more energy to do things, more motivation to get off my ass. It's not much, really, but small steps count a lot when I've been in this rut for a long time, repeating the same cycle of crap. Now I just have to reinstate my workout schedule that I've slacked on for the past three months.

And as for the video, it was quite informative! I think the guy was a little droning, but understanding the brain's processes and how this sort of behavior affect's ones mind is very helpful for understanding all kinds of addiction, not just porn. You were pretty close. Having looked it up, it's the body reacting to the consistent increase in levels of multiple neurotransmitters (dopamine included, acetylcholine too) and hormones causing it to behave a bit wonky. I looked it up a few days ago so I forget if the increase led to down-regulation of the receptors of the neurotransmitters involved or not, but that would also explain things. To elaborate, when there is too much of a neurotransmitter, the body responds by reducing or down-regulating the amount of receptors in the brain for said transmitter. Similarly, when there is too little, the brain up-regulates and creates more receptors. Down-regulation causes loss of sensitivity to a given neurotransmitter so there must be more to experience the same effect. It's all just the body's ongoing efforts to maintain homeostasis.
