Method for Attaining Lucidity

Hey people,

just wanted to share a lucid experience I had yesterday.

So, first thing, I was taking a midafternoon nap. I had gotten about 7 hours of sleep already, and went back to bed shortly after noon. After waking up briefly from the nap, I rolled over and attempted to use the affirmation technique to attain lucidity by repeating mentally "I am dreaming", however, I added a twist to the method in that I also tried to write the words "I am dreaming" in my mind's eye, or on the back of my eyelids if you will.

I could see the words take shape, and then suddenly I was looking at a picture of a tree, still repeating "I am dreaming". That's when I realized I was dreaming. A quick reality check confirmed my suspicion, and there I was. Dreamland. Awesome.

To summarize:

I used wbtb/ taking a nap,
I mentally repeated "I am dreaming" and also produced these same words in written form in my mind.
The images of the words led to dreamscape images.
I performed a reality check to confirm that I was dreaming.
Dreamland baby, dreamland.


Just wanted to share a tactic that worked for me,

Alright, this technique worked for me again.

A few things worth mentioning:

First, I tried this method a few times throughout the night and I was too tired to concentrate and / or was not sufficiently rested to enter directly into REM sleep.

Second, I woke up this morning after about 8 hours of sleep, stayed up for about 45 minutes, went back to bed and managed to use this technique to successfully become lucid.

Third, upon becoming lucid, I "fell" backwards on purpose. I was overcome with the vibrations and other effects of SP. A new dreamscape appeared, I did another reality check, and was still lucid.

Fourth, this technique produced several false awakenings. Repeated reality checks produced a chain of five or more subsequent lucids in a row. The same thing happened last time with this technique.

Fifth, I have been doing reality checks regularly throughout the day. Inhaling through a plugged nose is the one that works best for me, and I've been doing it as often as possible, but probably not as much as I could.

This technique is funny, it's a sort of double affirmation. On the one hand I'm repeating the affirmation mentally while simultaneously visualizing the same affirmation spelling itself out letter by letter, scrolling across my mind's eye. The visual part is what ends up turning into the dreamscape, but repeating the phrase "I am dreaming" is what brings me to the realization that I am in fact dreaming. All it takes is a quick reality check and......dreamland.

I tried this method again after about 4 and 6 hours of sleep. I slipped into dreams on both occasions, but did not manage to become lucid.

The second attempt I even had a dream about Arnold Schwarzenneger giving the state of California a lucid mandate. "Visualize blue skies" he was saying from behind a podium.

Too bad I didn't reality check that one.

I tried this method after getting 8hrs of sleep. I went to bed at 11:00 and woke up at 7:00A.M . I stayed for 45 min on my computer looking at this site. After 45min of this I tried to go to bed but I couldn't picture the words "I am dreaming" going across my eyelids.

For me personally, visualizing simple shapes like triangles and squares is quite easy any time of day. As such, seeing words spell out letter by letter has proven not too difficult either.

Maybe try visualizing simple shapes while meditating or when you have some time to relax. Later on, see if you can progress to having these shapes become letters.

This method worked for me again today. After about six hours of sleep, I woke up, and did the visualization as well as the audio affirmation in my mind.

Before long I found I was lucid. I had several false awakenings, and several lucids in a row. A few of the lucids were incredibly stable, and seemed to last a long time.

I have actually been trying this method a fair bit over the last several days, but with the stress of the holiday season, it only worked again today finally.

A little story:

in one of my lucids, I told a DC that we were dreaming. He looked at me in shock, and I told him "just plug your nose and see if you can breathe through it". I then had a false awakening, and saw my brother in law. Her looked at me and said "hey, you're dreaming you know". I did a reality check, and dreamland baby!

Thanks a lot guys. I've definitely found a method that works for me quite well. Now, I'm wondering if other people have experiences trying techniques similar to this, or if other people might want to give this a shot and report whether or not it works for them.

I've actually used the "writing" on the back of my eyelids before while doing my mantra, because it helps me keep focus on the mantra itself and not on whatever randomness comes floating through my mind... I'm going to give it a shot when I have the time(things are quite busy right now), and report back. Could take a few days though:)

Nice. Might just be simple enough to work for me.

Hey, nice strategy. I'm hoping to try it myself.

How long does it usually take for you to start dreaming after you lie down? Do you just lie down and do your strategy for a few minutes, or does it take longer than that? Even an estimate would be really helpful.

Do you repeat the phrase "I am dreaming" through your mind in your own voice?

Lastly, do you actually see a dream as it is forming, or do you black out and "wake up" in dreamland?

Thanks if you can answer these questions. As for me, I will try to contribute to this thread by trying this for myself. I highly doubt it will work for me, even though I know that not having confidence in yourself can cause failure. Well, no way to find out until I try it for a couple of nights.

to begin, this method does happen very shortly after I lie down. So far it has worked three times, and every time I am only doing the double affirmation for no more than five minutes. Unfortunately I don't have a lot more time than that to dedicate to lucid dreaming, and sleep is too valuable to me.

Second, yes, I do repeat the "I am dreaming" affirmation in my own voice.

Third, I do not think I see the dream form. I know that the dream forms as a result of my visualizations, however, I must black out because it seems that all of a sudden I find myself in a dream, and am saying to myself "I am dreaming". I do a reality check (which I have been doing throughout waking life fairly regularly), and there it is. A lucid dream.

I'm not entirely sure, but it seems that as I watch the words form in my mind, my eyes move around to try and read the words that are forming, which "tricks" my body into entering REM sleep. I think this might be happening, but again, without another party to observe, can not be sure. However, this is what my intuition tells me is partly occurring.

I should mention that this morning I tried this method to no avail, however, throughout the night I tried several DEILDs which are very effective in my experience and those did not work either.

I will try it again soon because I only tried it once and you can't expect immediate results all the time. ;)

Had a really vivid FA in which I thought the technique wasn't working, got up, and went about my morning:p Sadly enough, failed to recognize it, that's what you get for not RC'ing when waking up all the time:)

I too had a FA at least one time using this technique. However, because of mentally repeating "I am dreaming" I did a RC and became lucid.

This is what I like about the method: the visual affirmation becomes the dreamscape, the auditory affirmation let's me know I'm dreaming.

I did part of this last night, friday night. But i didn't wait til hours after sleeping, i did it when i went to sleep that night, i produced those words mentally in my mind, and in written form. But i added a little twist, i added what i wanted to dream saying it mentall in my mind and forming it in written word in my mind.

It worked partly, i got the dream, almost, it came in a different form but it was basically what i wanted but, i wasn't fully aware, only partly aware that i was dreaming. In a way i knew it was a dream, but i still had a fear that it wasn't a dream and i was afraid to do what i wanted to. I'm going to try this again tonight, and if i dream, i'm going to report whether or not i got lucid and had the dream that i wanted.

I hate to sound like a broken record but the simplest way to a LD is by visual meditation. Practice relaxation techniques and visualize ... anything. The act of visualization and the occurrence of dreams both activate a section of our big human brain called the secondary visual cortex. This is not junk science, magic or voodoo but scientific fact. I have to chuckle to myself when reading some lucid dreaming 'methods' ... but yours is valid. P.S. It is also interesting to note how often a single tree shows up in LDs, but now I digress. So, it appears that the double affirmation can be used for dream incubation as well. I will have to try this and report back my results. This could be another means to becoming lucid in that once you find yourself in the dreamscape / dream situation you implanted into your mind, lucidity is only a quick RC away.

It seems that this is a way of taking advantage of the edge-of-sleep state you get after waking up sometimes or right before falling asleep. I myself have entered LDs from that state, and I suspect that the same mechanism is at root here. For that reason, I think this will only work if:
A. You can time it so you begin the repetition as you are actually falling asleep
B. You have all ready been sleeping immediately before using this technique.

I'll give it a try.

Is this kind of like a wild. It sounds like it. Since after all you are in a way staying conscious while falling asleep. I like it though. Might try it tonight, post results tomorrow if i do it.

I'm going to give this a shot. It sounds really promising.

I had another lucid last night using this method and i still remember the dream. In fact i also got up earlier than usual today, did a few things, and later that afternoon i had a nice wild. I even felt sp, and had a tremendous feeling of pressure on me while i was sleeping, i don't know how i went to sleep so fast, but the sp was incredible. Tonight i'm going to try what you said again, and see if i can incubate the kind of lucid dream that i want.

Just woke up after using technique last night. It worked for me. I don't remember exactly, but i do remember having a lucid dream, and i remember some of what happened in it. But this could have been a random fluke. I will try again tonight if possible.

This isn't really like a WILD in my opinion. It's more like a DILD where you are suddenly telling yourself you are dreaming. With WILD you go from waking to sleep paralysis to dreaming. With the double affirmation, you go from sleeping to dreaming and become lucid while dreaming.

Congrats Ayanizz! I'm glad I could help. In order to increase vividness and stability, I recommend rubbing your hands together. It works quite well for me.

I meant a fluke as in it might have happened with or without the technique. For me to verify i need to try it multiple times and have it work more than once on those tries. If possible, as i mentioned, i will try again and possibly use this every night this week. I love testing out different ways to go lucid since wilding is incredibly hard for me. I've been lucid dreaming for around 5 years, gotten a ton of LD's. But out of the dozens of tries on wilding none of them worked. I've done around 5 different variations of the WILD too. So if this works u are a life savor. :)

This sounds like a really good idea :) I'm going to try the WBTB tonite to get my first LD.

I'm going to try this either in a nap this afternoon, or tonight, but I have one question for you.
Do you need to kinda lay still like the WILD technique, or can you roll over all you want as long as you focus on the mantra and the visuals?

For me personally, getting extremely comfortable so that I would fall asleep is what worked. If you roll around to get comfortable, by all means do it, just make sure to repeat the affirmation mentally and do the visualization.

It's not like I roll over all the time, but I think it would be easier to just lay comforable on one side, because I tend to lose concentration on something when I roll over (allot).

In a way this technique worked for my but in the end turned out to be more of an MILD....I tried 3-4 techniques last night and this morning. Needless to say I feel like the affirmations are what did it for me so thanks, I will be trying this method again.

The visualising really helps me stay awake I like it.
I try it a few times during the week but I was too tired and fell asleep.

Today I woke about 1 hour before I needed to get up. I had a few dream fragments and was dissapointed I couldn't remember much.

Decided to give it a try. I was really tired, and stressed about my day so I wanted to relax and have a nice lucid. ( I get lots of lucids if I can sleep again early in the morning)

I started visualising the 'I am dreaming' I didn't even get to finish the sentence I was in some vivid HI. I wake up.. but still inspired I tried again.

Entered 3 very nice, long and vivid lucid dreams, chained together I didn't have time to write them as I over sleept my hour. I'll write them up in the next day or so.

I'v had success with WILD before but from the last few days and tonight the visualisation really helps stay focused. I find once HI starts up I lose concentration and fall asleep this seems to help, keep my attached, the other day I came close to getting lucid too but was soo tired I fell asleep..

This technique is a MILD I guess, but with a visual twist. A double affirmation of sorts. I've been on a week long drought, I'm gonna try this in conjunction with DEILD.

That's pretty cool, I'll ahve to try that sometime.

I tried this last night before going to sleep, but I found that I couldn't get asleep.
I think this is more a wbtb method from what I have read? I gues it could be used before going to sleep, but I'm not very good at it :p (especialy the visuals, but I'll keep trying :))

This method sounds pretty good to me, I'll have to test it out tonight. But I was wondering, this is a WBTB technique so does that mean I have to stay awake for 20 minutes before going back to sleep? This is essencially a MILD so could I just try it right after I wake up without being awake for too long?

One thing I'm finding is that whether it be WBTB or WILD technique to LD, the time you stay awake is different for everyone. For me if I stay awake for more the 10 minutes it gets difficult to fall back asleep. Everyone needs to find their own optimum time up before returning to bed.

This technique has worked best for me when I took naps, but with WBTB I would say if you visualize better after a short waking period, use a short one. If you get better visuals / HI after 20 minutes or more, wait that long.

Hmm...this sounds like a good method. Definitely gonna have to give this a shot tonight.

Ok, so I have been in a slight drought with LDing. Even DEILD has not been working well for me. After I wake up from a dream, I keep my eyes closed, and find I can't sleep, until eventually I just stop trying to LD and fall back into sleep. Oddly I always have dreams, many of which are quite abnormal, but rationalize the scenarios I am experiencing somehow, and fail to recognize that they are dreams.

So, this morning, after several failed DEILD attempts, I remembered to use the double affirmation while I lay with my eyes closed after waking from a dream. I repeated "I am dreaming" and spelled the words in my minds eye. It was incredible! On two occasions a blue computer screen appeared before me which said "Input Commands".

I again wrote "I am dreaming" into the computer (in fact I wrote three different sets of commands into the computer, not sure how), and on one occasion I felt the awesome waves of SP come over me, but was woken up by my GF. On the other I went into a full scale LD, although it didn't last super long unfortunately.

I used the double affirmation again in conjunction with a DEILD later again, and again saw a huge contract appear before me in which I could read the letters clearly (forget what they said unfortunately). Unfortunately after the vivid HI I just slipped back into good old oblivious dreamland. I would have preferred to be lucid, but hey, dreamland in general is a pretty cool place to be.

I too seem to have hit some kind of block but that's probably with the exams coming closer. I have no time for naps, and when I attempt a WBTB I just fall asleep too fast again. I have had once though where I was unable to fall back asleep, so it's always something:P
I think if I saw the blue screen of death appearing while I was trying to lucid, I'd wake myself up out of complete hatred :D But apparently it helped getting you lucid... Did the screen just pop up like that or did it slowly show itself (as most of my HI seem to do)?

Yeah, the blue screen just showed up. It wasn't a blue screen of death either. I quite liked it and welcomed it as an entry into full scale dreaming. I input in the commands "I am dreaming" and became lucid :)

Nightmare ,can we also use ''I'm am dreaming about etc'' as well?

Yes you certainly can use "I am dreaming about..." The main thing about this method is the visualization. It has also worked best for me in conjunction with WBTB or taking naps. Let me know if you have any more questions

Which method do you think would work for me better nightmare? ,I knew about lucid dreaming this year and I want to know exactly how to attain it to get the dream I want so much

What works best for me is visualizing the words "I am dreaming" scrolling across the back of my eyes, and repeating the same affirmation mentally. Use this in conjunction with naps or WBTB. Also, if you have not had an LD yet, I recommend checking the stuff on stabilizing your LDs such as rubbing your hands together. Good luck, LDing is the absolute greatest.

Sometimes nightmare I'm unable to control myself in a dream and how do you have a clear vivid vision in a dream?

I've never had a WILD or a LD for that matter but I'm going to try this.

Like Nightmare's first post, I'll simply repeat "I'm dreaming" in my head's voice and visualize it on the back of my eyelids. I'm aiming for a white chalk on chalkboard look with no scrolling.

I'll tell you how it turns out.

Hey Dancr. The best way I have found to have very vivid dreams is by falling backwards in your dream and imagining a new dreamscape. Often times it will appear, but often times you will have a false awakening which is why it is important to reality check as soon as you wake up as often as possible. Aslo, if you like the dream you are in, rubbing your hands together in your dream works well also.

Can you lucid dream at will with this method?

iv had some success with this , but sometimes i do it and before i know iv already woken up the next day thinking what happened. althought i didnt do the mentally write it down but i will tonight.

Does this have to be a nap? Can I do it when going to sleep normally at night?

Hi Saurfung,

You can do this when going to sleep normally at night, but I have had the best success using this method with naps. A wake back to bed of any kind would work too I'm sure. If you are asking if you can use this method right after going to bed at night, you can try, but I never have had success LDing right as I go to sleep at night, and you'll find many of the members of DVs have not either.

how many hours of sleep do you need in order to lucid dream?

Strange. I read this thread yesterday and was quite excited to try a method similar to this. To my amazement i had a lucid dream, not one but many in one night. I couldn't believe how vivid it was and the fact that i had a lot of control. What i did was get into bed and prepare to sleep. I kept repeating " i am dreaming...do a reality check." i repeated this many times and then decide to visualize a car. When i was visualizing it i started to focus on small details of the car to make my visual more vivid. At the same time, i repeated "i am dreaming...do a reality check." After a while i started to dream non-lucid and suddenly something clicked and i felt i am in a dream. I then checked if i was dreaming by doing a reality check and thats when my lucid journey began. Now the thing is, when i have become lucid in the past, i have never done a RC. I would just know i am lucid without checking. Yesterday i did a reality check and i believe it had something to do with me repeatedly saying to do a reality check before sleeping

hmm, sounds like a MILD (some milds do include visualization). however, this does seem effective, especially with visualizing an affirmation, so ill give it a few tries. i havent had a normal DILD in so long, and have had to rely on FILD and my failed WILD attempts which are WBTB i think. but these either take to long or i ruin them by moving, so this one sounds pretty sweet. anyway i was wondering, you said it could have something to do with you moving your eyes, does anyone think that moving them rapidly can help out with WILDs, since it may help copy REM?

I would not recommend moving your eyes too fast, however, if you have ever seen someone in REM sleep, you will see that the eyes sort of twitch back, forth, up and down. Instead of trying to move your eyes exclusively as a means of simulating REM, try visualizing something and observing it as if you were awake. This will hopefully have the double effect of attaining a visualization as well as simulating REM.
