I don't think so, because I would think that might get boring. Most likely, it is that two people have enough in common to share common ground, but enough diversity and/or knowledge/skills to make each other interesting to each other. That way, the relationship or whatever never stagnates and both individuals grow off each other.

Yeah, pretty much this, but there are some areas where it would be good to have the same tastes...TV, music, and movies, particularly. You likely have one large TV and one main sound system...arguing over what's playing is not good. Different hobbies would probably be best, but a willingness to partake in one or some of your partner's hobbies from time to time.
