      Tell me about plastic

The plastic we are using currently is not biodegradable and because of that we are facing a shit storm of problems; since our "throw away" society is dependent on thee plastics. Scientists around the world all agree the only chance we got to possibly save ourselves is to eliminate plastic at its source.

Tell me about what we can do about it, is there an alternative to "throwing it away"? Note" I am not talking about recycling because even that is not as effective as you may think. Please read this if you are interested. And I'm thinking on the BIG scale, millions of plastic bottles.

There are a few things that we just can't use something else for, and making it biodegradable wouldn't be an option. Case in point: a toothbrush. You really don't want a wooden one, since that'll hold bacteria, and metal would hurt every time the brush hit one of your teeth. Glass is just impractical: who hasn't dropped their toothbrush? And if it were biodegradable, it would start deteriorating after a few weeks. I don't know about you, but I don't like little flecks of plastic coming off in my mouth.

Then again, we can do without bottled water. It's nice to have water that you can take with you anywhere and close it so that it doesn't spill, but seriously, get a canteen, or at least a reusable bottle. No worries about plasticizers leaching into your water, and no plastic going into the trash. This is, of course, coming from a person whose well water is considered better than bottled by several other people.

but how can we eliminate non-bioplastics, I am no expert on the subject but isn't there one extremophile that can thrive off eating plastics? I mean if extremophiles can survive in nuclear waste and 200+ degree temperatures I don't see why they cant live off of this.

Eventually, possibly soon, someone will develop a cost efficient method for changing waste plastics back in to a usable energy source, the oil that it was made from.
