Can you be friends with your boss?

Odd question, I know, but I am sort of friends with my boss, he's 54 married has 2 kids, I'm 19 and have I have a girlfriend... is it weird if me and my boss are friends and go out for drinks every once in a while? (for reference I live in Canada, I can drink legally!)

My boss is 40 yrs older than me and I adore her. Shes the queen of tough love. I meet up with her for coffee and shoe shopping on our afternoon a week off

Not strange at all. My boss is my parents' age, around 60 I suppose, and I'm 19. I've known him some 10-odd years, and we are quite good friends. He's my neighbor as well; I've watched his animals and house-sat (is that a word?) for him and his wife nearly every time they've gone out of town for years and years. We get together and talk books and woods stuff all the time.

So no, I should imagine it is not as uncommon as you might think, and certainly not a bad thing in the slightest!

      It's all fine!

In most of my jobs so far I have been good friends with the boss, and many of the people I work with. We often even now I don't work for them go out drinking and socialise. Plus it doesn't hurt the ol' pay rise and bonus

The only problem I've ever had with being friends with my boss is one tended to inadvertantly take advantage of the fact that we were friends. I had been due for a promotion for awhile and although he wasn't intentionally withholding it, he was neglecting to get on the owner's case about it because he figured it was not a big deal; us being friends and all.

The ability to happily respond to any adversity is the divine.

Most of the people I hang out with are over 30 and I'm 20. It's not odd at all granted you both have pure intentions regarding your relationship.

Why should that be odd? If anything it's a good thing, maybe even a smart thing.

I just thought it would seem odd to be friends with their boss who's almost 3 times their age. I'm also going to be going to school so I can basically have his job, that or the other manager I have who will be leaving within 3-4 years. Do you you think it would be weird to put him in the position to chose who the next manager is if one of them would be me? I would basically be his partner (he's the general manager, and I would be store manager, yeah there's a difference)

The age thing is only strange cuz you're 19. Give yourself another year or two tops, and then you'll forget about age altogether.

Then give it a few more years after that and you'll be forgetting all kinds of things: the names of people you've known all your life, your pills, where you live, what year it is. It'll be great!

Well at least this doesn't make feel feel so awkward about being friends with my boss lol. He's one of the only adults I feel like I can relate to, mainly because most other adults talk about their children or wife/husband, and well, I have no idea what that is like.

So I got pretty drunk and told my boss that I find him attractive lol... now I find it weird to talk to him at work. Why did I tell him I find him attractive? No effing clue. He's 54, balding, grey hair, hairy, fat(sort of), oh and STRAIGHT lol. Not to mention the fact I have a girlfriend. I'll just take it as random drunken moment.
