Thread: Question Regarding Body, Mind and Concious State.

I do apologize if I should have used a different forum in advance. I am hoping that someone could help explain an experience I saw last night to me. My husband was lying in bed-I was in the livingroom and I could hear him sort of yelling out but as if he was in a drunk sounding way; almost moaning. I went to see what was wrong and he looked as though he was having a terrible dream. His body was twitching almost seizure like, but not too voilently and his eyes were blinking really fast, but they were opening atleast half way. They didn't look as though they alert, but later found out they were. The closer I listened to what he was actually saying and mubbling I realized he was talking to me directly, not dreaming. I grabbed his hand and tried to softly wake him at first, but I had to shake him a little bit to get him out of whatever type of state he was in.

What I didn't realize was that the entire time he was trying to yell out to me for help. He said he was yelling for me and he was "asking me to wake him up because he couldn't shake himself out. He explained that he couldn't move. His body was in some sort of parallalized state. I thought he was having a nightmare while watching and listening (or even night-tremmor) because the longer this went on, the more terrified he sounded to me. Then I thought night-tremmor, but not the case because he saw everything around him and he was aware of everything that was happening around him- what I was doing before I came to the bedroom, when/how long I took to come in the bedroom, how long/what side it took me to come to him on the bed, what was on TV. I am obviously not educated in the Psychology field and hoping someone can help explain this for me. I cannot understand why or what sort of state it was that I saw him in, why or how this happen, but do know that it was not done intentionally by him. He did say that this sort of thing happens to him about once a month and it is scary to him; also that it usually happens if he is to fall asleep on his back or with a shirt on.

Is there a name from this or something like this I could read up on or if anyone can give me any insight regarding why/how it happens; any explaination would be greatly appreciated. I am completely with out words to what I saw, cannot explain it and would really love to have some sort of comprehension.

I would guess it's sleep paralysis.
If not, then something similar to an OBE, which is what fits the description otherwise IMO.

Thank you. By chance do you know anything about it? Any dangers or concerns I should be aware of, etc...

Well, sleep paralysis is a natural phenomenon. It can be even used to gain lucidity in a dream or if you believe in it, OBE.

There's a lot of information around here and there with regards to OBE ideas and philosophies.
Basically, it's an Out of Body Experience, also known as Astral Projection (sometimes definition between is wilfulness).

Why he was concerned, is a factor.
Sleep paralysis often comes with imagery of demonic things, with strange feelings and nightmarish trapped feelings.
OBE apparently isn't 'scary', so I would assume it's SP.

It could also be a mixture between the two, where he's entered SP then gone into an OBE, but retained fear from SP.

Fear is what could cause him harm most, I think. With OBE it's said that you cannot break the connection with the physical body, and are safe from most beings you could encounter.
With SP, fear is normal for many people. Remaining calm is the way to come out of it, and once calm, possibly even inducing lucidity or wilfully Astral Projecting.

Sounds like sleep paralysis. This happens to all of us every night, but we are not normally aware of it.

Sounds like your husband is a pretty strong-minded guy to be able to become aware in that state, and whats more - blink and make noises.

If you want, get him to have some kind of doctor check up - but really it doesnt sound like it is needed. Was he sleeping for a while and then became in that state? If so then i'd vote sleep paralysis.

If he was just sort of lying down reading, and then it happened all of a sudden maybe it was some kind of fit/siezure.

If you beleive it to be sleep paralysis, tell him about lucid dreaming, this website, and here he can find out how to use such experiences to his advantage. Sleep paralysis is a state that many of us here attempt to become aware in, every night.

I'm sorry, I meant to mention that I thought OBE; however, he did not feel like he left his body or see things as if he had. He saw everything from the position he was in which was on his back on the left side of the bed. I asked him if he felt like any sort of floating sensation and he said, "no, maybe a tiny bit". I guess that I am so baffeled by the fact that he told me what I did and when I did it while he was in this state; therefore, I am 100% positive he saw and heard everything around him which is so disbelievable to me.
