tell me about being a freemason.

tell me what you can. i understand there are secrets.
i'm interested in joining, not reading conspiracy theories.

though i do give a round of applause to those of you who question the government, religion, ect.

This is an interesting take on Freemasonry from a member's perspective.

I have seen a few specials on Discovery and History, and there is even a masonic lodge in my town (In the middle of nowhere!) But what I have seen, they claim to have nothing to hide and be pure, and dismissed all rumors.

By far, Mothra (in all of it's forms) is the worst kaiju of all time.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or if the forum's age check was circumvented.

Actually GWB isn't a free mason, he is part of the skull and bones, which is a different organization for the 'record' but unofficially i don't know if they are connected?

Either way, he is a bad person.

Well, most of their "secrets" lose value outside of a religious context of steady progression. You know how that goes. I could tell you the grand high initiated legend of a group right now and it would mean nothing. But if you spend years working up to a position where you can hear it, meditating and improving yourself along the way then it has a massive value as a symbol.

Every group has dark little secrets. Every group talks differently in mixed company to with insiders. I imagine some Freemasons are bad people. Bad people are universal.

In my town three freemasons own a lot of buildings, according to rumour. One runs the local greasy spoon, which serves really brilliant breakfasts. From this I deduce the conspiracy theory that the Freemasons:

      1. Have massive political power.
      2. Cook a damn good breakfast.

      Perfect thread.

I would be interested in joining the Freemasons, except:

      1. It looks relatively easy to get into. Being a Freemason doesn't look like it really means much, as it seems 1/50 people are one.

      2. The organization is so massive I have no idea how any coherency can be maintained pertaining to traditions.

      3. How many people are serious about their commitment?

      4. If I am going to be spending a significant amount of time in Freemasonry, I really do want to know if there is anything you really "work for," instead of simply being in a fraternity that requires you to keep rigid traditions.

What I am saying is... what is the point? If all the conspiracy theories are not true, then it is just a fraternity. With massive lodges. It may be a very good looking one, but I really don't see the point in having to attend all the meetings and all the traditions and all the ceremonies and rise in rank if it is just a Fraternity, and all it manages are internal relations.

Slap me hard if I am wrong, please.

All I see is a fraternity mired in tradition, filled with... just... people. Ordinary, everyday people who happen to respect the same values. In that case it is just a self-improvement fraternity.

Please don't take it offensively, but that is what I see. I don't want it to be an all-powerful world dominating cult like everyone else wants it to be, but could someone tell me how "deep" it really is?

well a lot of it is about working your way through the different degrees of masonry to gain access to more and more philosophical ideas. i think it's sort of a multi-purpose organization. it's about morality, charity, and good company. with philosophy still being important but really more of a side dish to the others.
