I know a few people who have. So I IMed them and got their testimonials.
"Go away dude you're creepy."
"It's 'laser eye surgery' not 'lasik' "
"ur a fucking dumbass."
I'm curious about this myself so I will stay tuned to this thread.
About five years ago, I was listening to a radio show while driving in my car, and they said that the surgery would produce excellent results... and then your vision would take a permanent plunge for the worse in a decade or so. I don't know if this was ever true, or whether they've made significant improvements since then (I'm sure they have, in any case)... but be very careful if you're considering this. :) The eye is too important to be hasty about any of it!
True. Besides, glasses are sexy.
I have heard and read nothing but good things about this procedure.
Two of my friends and my uncle has had this done. It was bing bang boom and your done.
I think for a few days afterwards you have to ..do something. I forget. :P
Edit: glasses are sexy. 2¢
Does anyone know how costly it is?
Glasses are quite sexy. The fashionable kind, anyway. :D Omg. Black-rimmed especially. Uhh :paranoid: perhaps I should take this to the fetish thread.
I've heard that also. I hear that some people have lost their vision in a few years after having it done. I'm not sure if that's still true, or if that only happens in a rare case. Though, this is something I've been considering also ( once I have the money;)) But I have eye contacts now, and they're fine. It would be better to not have to worry about that at all. I rather have to wear glasses or contacts forever then loosing my vision in a few years.
I would only say research your ass off before you get it done.
I have both glasses and contacts and I too would rather wear them forever before losing my vision at any time!
I have the money and am considering this as a early birthday present for myself.
My husband and son think I should have it done.. and I really want to because my contacts bother me as my eyes get dry and yet when I wear my glasses by the end of the day I have problems seeing with them up close (after being on the computer all day). :(
I am really torn. I have researched and read both glowing and harrowing reports on the procedure. It's so scary because if you make a wrong decision.. you're pretty much screwed. :P
I know the government doesn't have faith in it, because they don't let you fly a plane if you've had it.
ugh.. I know I have the same problems my contacts get so dry I can only think of my eyes when it happens. And sometimes when they are near their end of using I get sensitve to light for some reason.
Have you gone for a consultation?
I would say see what he/she recommends and the risk if you haven't already.
Again I would say research it and make sure.. Though, the results I hear are amazing. I'm jealous already because you are able to have it done :P
Good luck!
 .. I've never heard that before!! If you're a pilot and you have the surgery do they just make you quit flying?
Nope not yet.. still just in "considering" mode. I'll probably go to a couple of different doctors and see what each has to say.
I'll definately report back what they say after my consultations. ;)
Definitely go into the office prepared with your questions. Doctors have a way of thinking that people don't need to hear all of the information. They especially believe this about women. Be aware that the US's healthcare system is way more expensive than anywhere else, and it is not anywhere near among the best out there. Just things to keep in mind when you go in for a procedure that could have some real risks.
GO CLAIRITY, GO! :D
Both my Mom and my Uncle have had it done. My Mom is very happy with the results, and I don't know about my uncle, but I assume he's also happy.
That's about all I can say about that. :D
Glasses are very sexy though! Get the really sexy square ones. A lot cheaper than lasers and they look great. :D
Or you could get laser surgery if you want it. :D
 at M-Cat's replies.
Holy crap yeah! Hang on lemme find a pic...

Something like that. I love anything with a rim, and ones with a small width from the top to the bottom.
It's a thing. :P
Yeah, well the government does alot of weird things. You're not allowed to be a sniper in the army unless you have 20/20 vision. End of story.
Anyway, back to topic. My mother had her eyes done old school back when she was about 20. Shes 45 now, and the only problems she's ever had was trying to drive home on a dark rainy night. Thats about it. Otherwise, she wears small glasses for reading sometimes. She also got hers done WAY back, when they didn't use laser machines and shit. But its the same procedure. So, I'd say you'll be fine for a good 40 years with the way technology is. Hell, by the time your "eyesight" goes shitty, you'll have cataracks anyways.
I`m not sure about the civil rules, I know they clear your medical if you can correct your eyes to 20/20 with lenses, but I`m not sure about surgery. In the military though, anything but pure 20/20 is a no-no, even if you have perfect eyesight after the surgery they won`t clear your medical.
By the way, 20/20 just means average eyesight. People who don't understand what the numbers actually mean have a tendency to think that it means superior kick ass eye sight. :P
A friend from work got the surgery done. He's pretty happy with it. I can't really comment on long term effects (nobody can, when you think about it), but I can comment on his recovery (normal recovery, not problematic):
1) For the first couple of weeks, one of his eyes had a huge blood spot on it. It wasn't like he was high, it was like he was a vampire :)
2) His eyes dry out REALLY quickly, and he's constantly using eyedrops. This process lasts for months.
Otherwise, he's actually very happy with it. As for me, I'm happy wearing glasses, though I should have them adjusted so they don't leave the annoying red marks on my nose.
There`s also that other eye surgery (PRK I think it`s called?), you can compare the two. I also found out that the surgery can interfere with night vision, which is probably why it`s frowned upon in the aeronautical community.
You`d be surprised ! I think there`s roughly only a third of all people who have 20/20 vision or better. Personally, I can`t imagine walking around with everything out of focus...
I'd be tempted if it was 100% risk free. Being blind is no fun.
I'd still wear glasses, though. They're hawt, and I can't imagine life without them. But not being blind any more would mean I could take 'em on and put and back on ALL THE TIME which would be fun. Whenever I go serious study mode I'd just wap 'em on.
