She sat, not looking interested nor bored... Certainly not the same but not so very different from other girls, legs crossed, smoking a cherry cigarette, exhaling a cool, calm, steady stream of smoke in the direction of everything and nothing. Yet, something was remarkably different, even at first glance. She held her apple Martini with the gentle grace of a mother holding her newborn and the seduction of a lover his beloved. Each move she made seemed too perfect to be calculated or planned yet somehow had a purpose deeper than could be perceived by sight... flicking her ashes precisely into the ashtray was somehow more, just as a slight but definite turning of her neck and upper body to get a better view of, well, whatever it was she was looking at. No one ever knew just what. It was pure hell for the really smart ones, I mean, they'd watch as she seemed to enjoy everything yet was clearly not drunk... As if she'd secretely formed individual inside jokes with everyone before hand about each of the others and found endless pleasure in not sharing any of the fun with anyone else, just her and her secrets... Alone as ever, her faithful companion and together they watched each of the banal attempts from those, these, them... You know the boys, the guys and a few men. All different yet each the same; the encounters seemed as if a game, their desire her muse. Why the hell she was even there was beyond any of them.. Yet, she knew somewhere, in some bar, he was thinking of her and that someday the two would meet. A slight grin overtook her contemplative face as she simultaneously stubbed out her cigarette while realizing that tonight together they both would be going home alone. Either not knowing at all, or all too well she would be accompanied by something far more precious and of higher value than all those surrounding her would ever understand.
