The Fundamentals

She touched his visible head with her invisible hand; she felt her smooth skin and he felt a cold breeze. She was a ghost, a stain on the world left by a dead lady, latching on to life, unable to move on. He was the man she had made a widower when she didn’t see that red light. Her invisible body lifted up, only affected by half-gravity, she floated in the half-distance. So, when she looked down, she could see the man she had loved trapped to the ground by full gravity. She closed her eyes and bit her lips. She had to leave, to let go. He could not see the invisible. She started to fade and go beyond where there exists no gravity at all.

He felt a cold breeze on his head as if touched by an invisible hand. He sat down in the still grass; there was no wind. He laid his head where the little green fingers could caress his scalp. He closed his eyes and the entire visible world disappeared. He could now feel the full gravity so clearly pulling at him. He was a quick sleeper and no time passed that he could feel a dream forming, and the gravity was only half. He felt free and above him he saw the figure of a beautiful lady: The woman he had loved. The image was getting blurry. He flew to her and with his invisible hand, he touched her invisible head and her eyes opened and they were together again.

“Dimeglio” she whispered. “I love you.”

And her pale skin blushed for a small instant before fading again, becoming transparent.

“Tell the world, tell them, about the fundamentals of dreaming… Tell them, Dimeglio. It is so important. I love you. Never stop telling them!”

And she was gone. Only one sound echoed in his head and it was her faint whisper “Never stop telling them.”

Indeed, he never stopped.

That was fundamentaly beautiful, and more on-topic, than even Frank's posts in these 15 pages of Frank's experiment "How far I can push DVers and get away with it".

Quantum Gravity and Unified Theories

This division is concerned with the unification of general relativity and quantum mechanics into a theory of quantum gravity, which should also provide a consistent framework for incorporating the other fundamental forces in nature.

Despite intense efforts over the last years it is far from clear at this time what a consistent theory of quantum gravity will look like and what its main features will be.

In view of these uncertainties, the best strategy appears to be one which is both diversified and interdisciplinary. For this reason, the division aims to represent all the major current approaches to quantum gravity, in particular supergravity and string theory and their modern developments, as well as canonical quantization (e.g. loop quantum gravity) and discrete models of quantum gravity.

The canonical approaches to quantum gravity emphasize the geometrical aspects and appear well suited to deal with unsolved conceptual issues of quantum gravity, such as e.g.

1)- the problem of time or the interpretation of the wave function of the universe.

Important new insights have been gained over the past decade in the framework of loop quantum gravity, whose modern variants (spin foam gravity and group field theory) are among the division's main research directions.

This approach, which complements and extends the old geometrodynamics approach, employs a non-perturbative and background independent framework allowing (at least in principle) to describe the fluctuations of geometry itself, and leading to a discrete structure at the Planck scale.

On this basis, it is now possible to study the full quantum dynamics of gravity and space-time itself.

Most recently, these concepts have been successfully applied to the study of cosmological and black hole singularities, where classical general relativity breaks down.

In this way it may become possible to understand how the Big Bang singularity of classical relativity is “dissolved” in quantum cosmology.

String theory, on the other hand, takes a very different point of departure in tackling the problem of quantum gravity. The requirement of mathematical consistency and the non-renormalizability of perturbatively quantized gravity, and the need to incorporate the non-gravitational interactions are likely to force us to modify Einstein's theory at the smallest distances (Planck scale).

This may not only lead to a geometrization of the other fundamental forces (as exemplified by Kaluza-Klein theories and supergravity) and the unification of matter and gravity, but to an entirely new type of theory, which could explain how space-time is dissolved at very small distances, and in which Einstein's theory emerges only as an effective low energy theory, valid above distances above the Planck scale.

Superstring and supermembrane theory, and supersymmetric matrix theory are the most promising ansaetze so far in this direction. Major progress in this area has been recently achieved by members of the division, in particular the framework of the so-called AdS/CFT correspondence, and the study of certain infinite dimensional symmetries, which might underlie a unified and non-perturbative description of string theory (M theory).

She was in a blind panic. She had always been one to fight back against anyone who posed a threat, but here she found herself in a frenzy, running for her life. She stumbled upon a small cabin in the woods and, without thinking, ran inside.

She locked the door behind her, even though the door frame was already in terrible shape. She knew one swift kick would knock the door in, but she had no other choice. She scrounged up a few chairs to barricade it, but it didn't feel like enough. Nothing felt like enough, she would never be safe. The sheer terror clouded her judgement. She ran to the kitchen in search of a something - anything - she could defend herself with. There was nothing but a few knives that probably weren't even sharp enough to cut butter.

But then she heard it. The footsteps on the porch. It was too late. She grabbed a dull knife and ran into the bedroom, shutting herself up in the closet. Her heart was pounding so hard, she figured just the sound of that would give away her position. She tried to control her breathing, but the fear made it impossible to not gasp for air. But she had to, as the footsteps were getting closer.

She hunkered down in the small closet, leaning her head against the door. She had her pathetic knife at the ready, preparing for the worst. The footsteps were now in the room. Slowly, they moved towards her, each step banging louder and louder against the hardwood floor. She barely held in a scream as the final footstep clapped against the floor right next to her head. There was a long silence. She wondered if he was gone, if the nightmare was nearly over. But then, piercing through the silence, came a whisper so cold, so vile, it sent a chill down her spine. Before she fainted from the fear, those final words echoed through her head...

The Teachings

Jezebel sat at her school desk, it was made out of synthetic dark oak wood, a nice desk. All the other kids around her had the same ornate school desk. The large windows that lined the classroom were currently letting in the gold orange light of late afternoon, bathing the room along with the desks in it. The polished wood reflected the light back, making them almost appear to glow. It was a beautiful scene, and somewhat jarring, Jezebel thought. That such a surreal and pretty scene would be accompanied by a boring science class lecture.

It was currently the daily portion of the class that was devoted to teaching the findings and discoveries of our High Supervisor, Frank DiMeglio. The instructor was going over something about physics in dreams and waking life, which all citizens of the City know to be fundamental and so very important. You know, half gravity, inertia, invisible space, and all that other mumbo jumbo that Jezebel can never seem to understand. "I'm just stupid, I suppose" she decided one day while yet again listening to the repetitions of the High Supervisor's teachings.

But day after day of sitting through another lecture and another and another and another, an endless cycle of what seemed to be incomprehensible nonsense, Jezebel began thinking. The thoughts she was thinking were dangerous ones, so dangerous that she was relived no one could read her mind... but what if they could? She knew they couldn't but the mild case of paranoia she had developed due to the dangerous thoughts told her otherwise. "What if it is all just nonsense?" Jezebel thought, dangerously.

But if it was nonsense, utter nonsense babble, why was it being taught in schools? And praised by all? Surely other citizens must think similarly to her but like her were too afraid to question it, somehow it was just instinct that this wasn't something to question, perhaps not even in one's own head. Jezebel stared out across the sea of students and desks, they all stared ahead blankly while the instructor drew on the chalk board. Each one of them had this dead look in their eyes, even the instructor.

Jezebel tried to think of a reason as to why they are being taught this craziness, that is if it was craziness. One afternoon during lunch break she went with her best friend, Tristan, and some other classmates to the field to have a picnic. When she didn't think anyone else was within earshot she got up the nerve to ask him what he thought about High Supervisor's academic works.

"They're ground breaking, historic, awe inspiring, fundamental, and so very important. High Supervisor Frank DiMeglio and his work deserves all the awards he's been given thus far and more" Tristan replied almost automatically. She decided to clarify, although somewhat wary to after hearing his reply. "No I mean, like, do you understand any of it? Do you think it could actually mean anything or is it just... nonsense, rubbish, gibberish, poppycock?" she tentatively asked. His expression quickly changed from shock to fear to confusion and then finally relief, he explained that he too had thought often about what it could possibly mean, if anything.

They made a game out of trying to figure out the reason to be teaching kids useless, not even understandable, possibly fake science. They came up with many ideas, a filler lecture for the day, a form of hypnotism, nap time inducer, a way to subdue the populace, among others. They, like everyone else, would likely never know the true purpose behind it. It was a mystery for the ages. So the following day Jezebel and Tristan made their way through the school hallways with their fellow classmates, heading towards the science classroom. They sit in their seats, open their text books to the correct location, and await the instructor's arrival.

What else could they do? Neither knew how you would go about bringing up changing the teachings, let alone actually doing it. And they had a feeling if they tried, it would only be changing their fortune into misfortune. Besides, it wasn't hurting anything, at least as far as Jezebel could see. The instructor steps into the classroom, writes a message upon the chalk board, and begins with "Fundamentally proven inertial and gravitational equivalency: Why we necessarily exist in, and have extension of experience in, the middle distance in/of space."

Life continues on, everyday getting a refresher on High Supervisor Frank DiMeglio's teachings, a reliable constant in this often ever changing world. As the sun rises everyday it brings along with it the promise of more teachings, a never ending cycle. Which may be good, because despite the many years she's studied it, Jezebel has yet to understand a word of it.

The setting is a deep underground bunker where powerful men plot:

A man in a lab coat bursts in. “Have you read this?!?!” He throws down a news paper and the headline is revealed:

Fundamentally proven inertial and gravitational equivalency: Why we necessarily exist in, and have extension of experience in, the middle distance in/of space. HUGE NEWS !!!

“Yes, we have read it and are deeply concerned! This is the gist of it,
Together, on balance, the top of the VISIBLE head/body and the adjoining INVISIBLE space there constitute a MIDDLE distance in/of space. The VISIBLE space blah blah blah blah,,, buzz buzz, blah blah…
Hey, are you listening to me?” Says a man in a super bad guy uniform.

The man in the lab coat answers, “huh what, oh I fell asleep standing up. What did you say?”

This cycle repeats 3 times before the super bad guy gives up.

Later at the secret planning table:

“We must destroy Author Frank DiMeglio! Fundamentally and most importantly, invisible and visible space in FUNDAMENTAL equilibrium and balance necessarilly consitutes, well anyways I am sure you all get what I am saying.” No one does, but they nod anyways. “The problem is that Author Frank DiMeglio has now made all physicists obsolete and they are very important to super bad guy plots.”


“Ohhhh” says the assembled master minds.


“On top of that we want to take him captive as we feel he knows much more than he is saying. Take this for instance, ‘Notice how the VISIBLE waking experience IS comparatively INVISIBLE in relation to what is dream experience. VERY IMPORTANT. Vision begins invisibly inside the eye/body.’ We believe Author Frank DiMeglio has invented an invisibility ray or something. Then there is this ‘Accordingly, this invisible space IS middle distance in/of space consistent with half gravity AND half inertia.’ We are pretty sure this means the invisibility ray also gives super soldiers the ability of flight! Or something like that.” Says the guy in the super bad guy costume.

The next scene is at the noble prize awards dinner, where Author Frank so and so is getting his much deserved award:

As soon as Frank steps onto the stage a group of ninjas (or maybe pirates? Wait pirate ninjas, just to be safe as Frank probably has super powers), yeah, pirate ninjas fall out of hidden ceiling panels.
