A bottle of black hairspray dye. That's what gave me the idea. The idea that I could make my life more exciting. The idea I could give my life more freedom. The idea..that my life would be better than anyone elses.
"Vanessa! Are you coming or are you going to look around more?" My best friend, Mia Smith, said to me.
"I'll look around more! I'll meet you by the food court in ten?" I replied.
She nodded and left. I slipped the hairspray in my bag and snuck out of the store. A couple minutes later I met Mia at the food court in front of Starbucks.
"Listen! Major emergency...sorry! You can drive yourself home right? I will explain later." I said to her, trying to sound worried.
She told me it was okay and that she wanted to know what was happening as quickly as possible. As soon as I lost sight of her I ran into the mall bathroom. I sprayed the black dye all over my hair, put in fake green contacts, and changed into an outfit I would never even think about wearing. This was the start of my new life..as Kasia Shields.
If I was going to be a whole new person, I needed a whole new look. I went into every major store in the mall I could find and stole outfits Vanessa wouldn't dream of wearing. Ten packets of green contacts, more hair dye, more makeup, and anything else. I was going for a unique, hippie preppy look. I looked in the store's mirror, I looked amazing with black hair! Hmmm..
"Hey! I'm Dan! I just wanted to tell you...you're..uhh...super pretty. Your eyes are absolutely stunning." he said with an amazingly sexy British accent.
This boy went to my school! He was in every single one of my classes with me and he didn't even recognize me!
"Uhm..Hi! I'm Kasia Shields. Thank you! This is kind of a weird question to ask someone who I just met..but do you want to come with me to Starbucks? I was just heading over there to get a mocha. You seem like a cool person to talk to." I said in my best Icelandic accent.
I was THE MASTER at disguising my voice. Doing an Icelandic accent is my favorite. The way they speak in Iceland is just...beautiful. We went and sat down at Starbucks. I told Dan how I had just recently moved here from Iceland and made up a load of crap about myself. I made myself seem as appealing as ever.
He told me he grew up here in Wilmington, Delaware and told me about his parents and four younger siblings. He was actually very nice. In school, as Vanessa, I never talked to him. He was always very quiet. Though, he seemed to be quite outgoing here at the mall. We were actually bonding quite well..he seemed to really like me. Not ONE bit of him suspected I was someone else.
Now, the whole reason I started this double life thing is to make my life more exciting. What I was about to do would be the most thrilling thing I would ever do in my life. It was the very definition of thrilling. It was.. insane. Yet, I knew I could pull it off. With this disguise nobody would EVER know I was Vanessa. We continued to talk for a few more hours.
"Hey, I have something to show you. It's really cool!" I told Dan.
"I would love to see it." He grinned at me.
"It's at the Corndrew hotel..just across the street. If you go to the top, there is this amazing view of the sunset. I go there all the time just to think."
We exited the mall and crossed the street to the hotel. I told him I needed to go to the bathroom and would meet him at the top. He went in the hotel and I waited outside a few minutes. I didn't want anyone to expect anything. I casually walked into the busy hotel lobby and went up the stairs to the very top. I broke any camera I saw.
I met him at the top floor and led him to the stairs that went to the roof.
"The people look like tiny ants from here. It's so amazing..." I whispered to him. He looked at me with dreamy eyes. He leaned in to kiss me..
Then I pushed him. I pushed him and he flew to his death through the chilling autumn air.
