“THE SNIPER”
“Suddenly from the opposite roof a shot rang out and the sniper dropped his rife with a curse. The rifle clattered to the roof. The sniper thought the noise would wake the dead. He stopped to pick the rifle up. He couldn’t lift it. His forearm was dead. . . . He muttered, ‘I’m hit.’
The sniper dropped to the floor feeling exposed to the enemy. He felt the wound with his right arm. The blood slowly soaked his uniform. The arm felt as if it had been severed; no pain. Although his arm was hurt, his legs weren’t. The sniper crawled from the parapet and into the building. The sniper stepped quietly over broken glass and debris scattered on the floor.
The sniper slid down against the back wall and pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. The paper was a letter from his brother who was also in the war. The letter read, ‘Dear Brother, The war is a cold and heartless woman. She will do anything to take your life. Please be careful. –John.’ He crumpled the letter and shoved it back in his pocket. The sniper ripped a piece of cloth from his clothes and tied it tightly over his wound. Outside guns were firing and men were yelling out in pain. Occasionally he heard a thud of a man falling off a building.
The sniper closed his eyes in exhaustion. How he fell asleep he didn’t know. He began to dream…. Men and women all wearing black in a field stood stared down at something, something, unbelievably sad. The sniper heard his mother scream, ‘NO! MY BOY! MY SON, MY BABY BOY!’ His mother fell on her knees holding her head in to a handkerchief. A man ran up to her and held her. The sniper ran up to what the crowd was so sad about. He pushed the crowd causing them to move on one side. He slowly approached the subject of depression, what he saw woke him up. A car pulled up behind the building the sniper took refuge in. A soldier yelled, ‘He’s in here! Come, quickly!’
Two allies picked up the sniper and calmly laid him down in the jeep. The jeep’s engine started and the driver headed for the infirmary. The sniper began to dose off, ‘Th-thank you,’ he breathed slowly. Hours later the sniper awoke to a man yelling in agony. He tried to cover his ears, but the screams only sounded worse.
